2017 Sansui Serial Number Database

BA-3000,246040077,FaceBook Marketplace

This one is interesting - it appears to have a chrome faceplate.

Sometimes I get serialz that are next in sequence in the database. This week's SC-3330 is one of those.

This one is interesting - it appears to have a chrome faceplate.

I don't think we have seen that before. It looks like the whole case was chromed. Chroming is a multi step process that starts with polishing the metal to remove all imperfection. That polishing would remove all the silkscreen lettering on the face plate. It has lettering on the face plate so someone made a great effort to do this modification. It must have been intended to be seen, maybe in a disco or bar. It would be interesting to know it's history. Thanks for posting.

@PE9ZZ and @peterott, thanks for posting. I have yours too.

The serial number of this (chrome) unit is the lowest (oldest) in the database which makes me think it's a preproduction unit or perhaps one built for a show or product introduction.

It clearly has been customized based on the bright green power LED (maybe recapped to?) - but I find it hard to believe that someone would have the wherewithal or motivation to go through the chroming process, especially without damaging the engraved lettering. And to also chrome the top and side panels - which likely would never be seen; that's a lot of work.
This unit is for sale locally; the seller doesn't know the unit's history.
If I was a Sansui collector I'd snatch it up but I fear that - as an early unit - it would eventually need (like my extremely early AU-20000) major servicing and perhaps not be repairable.

Interesting hypothesis, but the serial number doesn't support it. 246040077 was built in April '76. Production of the BA-3000 started in May '75 so there was almost a year of production before this one was built. We have 98 BA-3000s on file including 12 that were built in April '76, ranging from 0009 to 00270. Now that doesn't mean that Sansui didn't build this custom unit as a show piece, but keep in mind that black face plates on their amps was a signature feature.

I didn't realize the face plate on these awesome amps was engraved. The engraving would likely survive the polishing process. Black paint could be wiped into the engraving and that would make the lettering pop against the chrome. It would still be interesting to know the history.

Actually, I don't know if the faceplates were engraved -probably not.

The T-7 is partially obscured, this is the only plausible serial. Feel free to discard:

We have 37 T-7s on file. 5 were build in April of '81 so it stands to reason this one was built that April. I'll put it in with a note.

Thanks!

Sometimes they're on the inside/bottom of their wood case below the rear panel. Which often makes the serial unharvestable.
