I'm just now looking at this thread for the first time, so please forgive me if I'm misunderstanding the topic, but...You don't remove the faceplate on a Marantz receiver to replace the lamps. You pull back the covers behind the faceplate.

In some units there is the risk of breaking off plastic tabs if you attempt to go in through the back. Also, some units have Vellum that one might want to replace. In my 2265B, I wanted to paint the insides of the rubber "boots" for the Stereo and DLB-1 indicators a bright white to get nice even indicator lights. To do that, you have to remove the dial. Removing the dial (the one time I did it so far) was easier than I thought. In short, all Marantz receivers are not the same and sometimes going in through the dial is a good option.
