Anyone have a source for 5.25" foam surrounds for the Minimus 77's? Apparently Mat electronics doesn't carry this size.... :sigh:

Thanks...

I need some, too. I did find some at wooferrepair.com that would fit (IIRC), but the roll width is about 3/8" vs. 1/2" for the stock ones (again, IIRC). Might have to give them a try anyways.

It burns me up....

...to be paying $20 for a surround kit when 2 surrounds is about $2.00 from Mat. But, if they don't sell the size you're looking for, you're S.O.L....:gigglemad

However, these pirates have to get them from somewhere...Now if only I could find out where......:scratch2:

The Speaker Exchange has them on their website www.speakerex.com. If the 5.25" aren't the exact right ones, you might need to use larger ones and cut and seam them to size. it's hard to find all the exact same foams these days. they are nla. so are the $2 prices.

Heh...

I beg to differ...Here's the foam page at Mat....

http://www.matelectronics.com/cgi-b...eaker___Accessories_11.html#aFER_2d5#aFER_2d5

$0.80 per 5" surround. Unfortunately, they only offer 5" or 6" foams.

At the SpeakerEx, the price for the 5.25" foam surround is $14 /per kit for one speaker, or $10 for just the foam per the 1-800 number. Ouch!

I wonder how much it would cost to make a couple hundred or a thousand of these things? Even if turned around and sold at $5 bucks each, you'd do pretty well over the long run....:scratch2: And since Mat elec. must be making money selling these at 80 cents apiece you gotta wonder how much they cost them???

Anybody wanna put a ruler across the top of one of those drivers, and post a picture of it? If I can get all the dimensions, I probably have one that will fit (or can probably get it)...

Regards,
Gordon.

Will this work?

Let me know if this doesn't show the details....
Thanks.....

Looks like it...

Hmmm.... I thought I looked at all the old 77 threads....:scratch2::dunno:

Has anyone tried the Mat 5" with a bit of stretch?

Thanks,
Allan

Well, for under a buck apiece...

I decided to pick up 4 of the MAT 5" surrounds, and refoamed the first 77 today. Foam fits fine, the only difference being that the roll is smaller. I put a temporary patch on the other original surround with a piece of old foam from the first repair, and A/B'ed the two speakers. Didn't hear a noticeable difference in bass response, although a patch of old suspect foam is at best a temporary thing. How much could the different sized rolls change the bass response? :scratch2:

I'll post some pix tomorrow....

PM received,:thmbsp: you have a reply.

I'd guess that the smaller roll shouldn't matter too much unless you are pushing the driver to its limits.

It's really difficult to buy surrounds etc. in the UK, I've tried ordering stuff from stores in the US before but they normally have a minimum order which makes postage very expensive.

Sweet! I'm glad it actually works. I got a few I can take out of my closet now.

I hope we're still talking about speakers???:scratch2:

Pix!

Here are the before and after shot. I haven't actually run them again today, but I will shortly....Any of the speaker experts want to comment on the smaller roll?
Thanks....

Ran 'em through their paces....

And there doesn't appear to be much difference in the bass response. Hopefully the surrounds will also loosen up a bit with some playing time. I did manage to blow another chunk of foam out of the non-refoamed woofer. Guess 1-2 watts of Yamaha CR-2020 "Natural Sound" was too much for them...:D...Listening test over...
