That isn't the only thing. JBL L-100's for $3500, Marantz receivers for close to $5K. I guess there are folks out there who buy these items who either have way too much disposable income or just don't have a clue. As for the sellers selling this high, they too may not have a clue or are just greedy.
I think the point has been made that whether the slur was referring to the purchaser, the act of paying $8K or the price itself... it's in bad taste.
Moving on from that...yes the market for vintage hi fi has been very strong lately - especially for TOTL "monster" receivers of the late '70s.

Lmao in 20 years you will be saying wow I wish I had bought that SX-1980 for 8k when I seen it then, I must have been __________ for not doing it there over 50k now.
Not sure where you have been the last 20 years but prices have went up on these and other vintage items and continue to rise every year. I can remember buying one for $200.00 then selling it for 2k back then everyone thought 2k was a ____________price to pay for one, Now who was ______________ me for selling it for 2k or the buyer who paid 2k and made a great investment since the same receiver today in the same condition would likely fetch 12-15k?
Just because you think 8k is too much to pay and is a ____________ price to ask or pay for one makes no difference, people who want one will continue to pay whatever they have to to get one with or without your approval.

I don't think there's such a thing as greed unless they are selling something someone actually needs to survive AND they have a monopoly on said product. If we have the free will to pass on it and look elsewhere than it's just business.
Like others have said, I have no desire to own stereo gear because it's collectible. My aim is to hear music.

It's an interesting development in itself. I have been in this hobby now for quite some years (+20) and the SX-1980 was the one I never owned as I always thought that decent ones were way overpriced. But... recently I bit the bullet and bought one after all. Without going into detail about what I paid, I can assure you that it was more than I ever thought I was willing to pay for an SX-1980, but I just wanted to have one after all.. And my thoughts are that it is more likely that prices will go up further instead of down, same as with some other highly sought after vintage items, like specific design furniture, or cars for that matter.
What I do find interesting, is that the prices of TOTL receivers have gone up excessively more than for instance a C3 and M3, I guess it has everything to do with popularity; the Exclusive components were not wide spread or known in the past and neither today, were the SX-1980 has always been well known, both in the day of it's launch, up to today.
In the end i think it all comes down to the old and simple truth that a value of something is only determined in the eye of it's beholder(s)

In the land of Diamonds water is king because there is little water but lots of Diamonds just because something is not worth much to you does not lower the value to someone else. And when selling the buyers willingness to pay is the determining factor in it's value, our thoughts on value do not matter.

The thing is people laugh at these prices but if things continue on in 10 years 12k will be what it costs for a parts unit not a nice looking restored unit. I don't see an end anytime soon from these continuing to rise in price. 20 years ago everyone thought 2k was the max crazy high price.

Just over 10 years ago one was for sale on CL with the original box for $1,500. It sat there for several weeks, the owner knew it was worth at least that much. I REALLY wanted to get it, but I had space limitations and just had no room. Fast forward to now, I kick myself every time I see one for sale.
Covid blew the collectables market to the moon, and that included vintage audio, but only certain audio tbh. TOTL pieces from the big manufacturers of the 70s, upper-end home RTR offerings, anything at all with a Marantz badge, etc., etc. Nothing else seems to really have priced upward as quickly.
People will happily pay $1000 for a small watt Marantz receiver now, so it's quite understandable that a hard to find, somewhat iconic and beautiful TOTL unit is fetching top dollar. Millennials are inheriting the boomer cash now, and are into collectables including period furniture and electronics. It is what it is, and that's ok.
I sold mine some time back at a good price to a nice fellow who was really excited to get it. It needed some TLC, he drove a long way on my word and I knew it had found a good home; it's not always about how much I can get for something.
