$8k for sx-1980.....WTF???

I suppose for that sort of money, it's going to get the respect, and use it deserves, rather than rotting away in storage, or worse, just thrown away, like much of this equipment sadly was, especially in the 90's when repair shops were much less common.

I'm too young to remember much of my equipment, most of it I brought because it was a better value to performance ratio compared to similar spec'ed modern equipment, and the build quaility is often much better.

A late 80's Akai AM-93/AT-93 integrated/tuner combo would out perform most TOTL receivers, for well under a $1000, and includes a reasonable DAC @titanstats

>Akai
Nah, I’ve had Akai from that series, it wasn’t even close imo; even their TOTL 5 gang tuner from the separates series wasn’t close, which surprised me. Pioneer and Marantz absolutely nailed the aesthetics of their best receivers as well; as much as I’m a fan of Akai they could never compete on that level with their designs. There are real reasons people love these units besides nostalgia or investing; anyone saying they don’t perform has likely never heard a properly restored example.

Interesting points of view from everyone, in the end I suppose it does not matter the reason/s why people choose to pay way more then most of us here would for a receiver, the fact is they are willing too, some see it as an investment others because they lusted after one when they were younger, some may want one just to say they do like a status symbol and likely many other reasons too.

For myself being on a fixed income that most people would starve on especially living where I do I have to be careful how I spend my money simply because there is only so much of it with little opportunity to make more so unless I buy a storage unit or the like with some great gear inside on the cheap I likely wont be getting any Krell or Mark Levinson ETC quality gear in this lifetime.

For my own personal use I listen to music through a set of headphones the majority of the time with a cheap tube headphone amp coming from my laptop, it is easy convenient and actually sounds pretty good, yes I have owned some pretty decent gear by most peoples standards and still do but the vast majority of it is goes up for sale within a month of buying it for a couple of reasons one is I need to re sell it so I have both money to live on and buy more gear when I find it. Not sure if I would be a hoarder if I had an endless supply of money but I would not sell much either.

I think for my own personal use 1k max is the number I choose to buy gear for myself to listen too and keep, I cant justify more then that, even as poor as I am I still have a need to leave my family something and if I kept the best gear for myself I would be unable to do that and truthfully none of them give a rats ass about quality gear it would all wind up in the dump or at a local auction house selling for next to nothing, so a little hidden cash and a few select other items that my brother knows about will go to them when I go along with my truck and personal belongings. No need to make it hard on them by having to wade through piles of crap no one wants

I have one brother that will get the bulk of my estate my other brother is a multi millionaire and my sister is doing quite well for herself and I gifted her some property 30 + years ago so she could buy the house she owns now, also they neither want or need what little I have but I will feel good knowing my one brother will have himself a nice truck to drive and some extra cash every month to live on.

Your post are always pretty interesting to me Snow.

>>none of them give a rats ass about quality gear

Lol, I told my wife if she dumps my kit on CL for cheap that I’ll come back and haunt her. She had no idea that my tape library was worth anything, she bloody does now.

Like an idiot, I put my pair of cerwin vega d5's out at the curb, because in the early 2000's, there wasn't repair kits easily available. I put them out, 20 mins later, I went to go grab them, and put them in garage, and boom, they were gone. Dumbass I was, along with dumping all my vinyl.

If this was my dream receiver, I would find a way to come up with the cash to buy it! It’s usually a “want/desire” more than a “need”.
Hence supply and demand.

I threw out an HK twin power for busted RCA inputs before I knew anything.

Somebody probably came here and posted scroe threads for both of us.
