across the bench [season-2] the electron strikes back

yeah thats awful close spacing for plate voltage, especially under AC conditions. Would have been less bad to put the two screens in the middle but still closer than I'd prefer for tube stuff.

My fix would probably involve cutting those traces with a wide gap and soldering the leads directly to the tube sockets. Will definitely make assembly more difficult but it won't blow up again from that issue.

next up is a passive preamp, new from amzn or other sources, that might need a recap and power supply rebuild if there is time...

typically used for quick and easy testing of power amps, although no +db ability obviously. its sitting on the bench and so were the correct size hex wrenches, this was going to happen sooner or later.

volume pot plugs into the main board.

interesting to note the pcb date code of 2019 version 1.3 and this was bought in 2026.

final view of the passive preamp, it shed its skin/shell.

reasonably simple construction and decent build quality. the preamp was/is the volume control for the yam under glass project, which is photo bombing the background. early version of the yam since it has the original/factory bottles installed plus r&d green board visible.

next up to bat is a sort of hobby box 300b with different out-txf's installed, rated for around 5w stereo.

blue masking tape is to mark which way the bottom panel was installed, reference reminder.

simple amp with no impedance options on the exterior and a new jersey company sticker for a business that no longer exists.

the professionally made red board inside paints an interesting picture, kit based system.

and i am late to the party yet again...

the hobby box chassis has zero vents

looking inside, an undesirable thermal management issue is staring me in the face (per channel).

perhaps someone has already been in here and inflicted the error, or something.

couldnt find a manual/schematic specifically for the 300b, the 1r5 5w seems to be an oddity to some extent.

the amp was brought in for a recap plus evaluate premium signal cap options. basic thermal scan indicates its gonna need more than that...

board removal for recap

replacing the 1.5r 5w inferno with a pair of 3r 35w in parallel (70w should do nicely)

the new electrolytics, no changes to the original capacitance, low volts were bumped up one step. all of them are rated for 10k hours at 105c. this system could use some spacers for the belly pan and some actual chassis feet vs cheap sticker pads but thats a future option at this point. mounting a low profile dc fan just to circulate the air inside the chassis would help, if the spacer mod is approved.

all the new caps have at least 2mm gap above the pcb for better thermal isolation. some caps have a 5mm lift kit for off-roading. the 220nf orange drop were replaced with temporary films until a premium cap is decided on. at least the system is ready for baseline testing in the demo chamber.
