ADS models, an impromptu rollcall

Those are gorgeous speakers!! I'll be getting an pair of L1090/2's from a friend this weekend. Do you or anyone have any opninion on these?

Never having the chance to listen to the 1090, i cant give you an informed opinion, but the fact that you are getting them from a friend, tells me that you will have plenty of time to check them out. A friend of mine has a pair of 1090's which have battered cabinets, but the drivers are all fine. He told me i could have them if I wanted, but at this time, I dont have the need for them, and he could do some bartering with them.

If the 1090's are even close to the 980's, then you will be very satisfied. What will you be driving them with? Right now, I am using my Sansui G-8000 at 120 watts per channel, and i think that if i could double that, these speakers would really open up, but i am quite content with how they are now. Let us know your thoughts on the 1090's after you have had them for a few days.

Duffinator: Want to sell your S700's for $300? :D
Sure, drop me a PM with your email address.

BTW I've also owned L980's and L1090's and both are excellent speakers. I also still have some JBL 4425's and the 980's are very close in sound. The 980's had beat cabinets so I parted them out. The speakers in my signature pushed the L1090's off to a new home. I really liked the L1090's.

I can't wait to get my hands on them as I have a house full of amps to play with. To mention a few favorites -Yamaha CR2020, EAD PowerMaster 2300, and a modded Cary SLI tube amp.. I've had good experiences with the A/D/S and Onkyo M508 combo.

SATORUSON: The TV in the background looks like one I just threw away last month. 30" WS Sony CRT HDTV?

I am not sure of the model, but it is a Sony 32". I picked this up a couple of years ago for 50.00. You cant even give these types of tv's away now a'days.

Sounds like you have some great gear to drive your speakers. Let us know which amp you prefer

I've owned a set of 1090/1 since new back in the day. Love em. You can place them easily in most any room because of the small foot print. They have a very full sound for their size and the drivers are high off the floor. Lacking a little bass compared to the 1290. I also love the 1290 but the 1090 is a little tighter in the bass with less box sound.

Just hooked up the L1090's and my first impressions is the highs aren't as sweet as the S600's, but makes up for it by being full-range. How cool are the soft dome mids?? Surprisingly the dual 7"'s produce abundantly taut bass! No boominess here.. I guess the Vandersteen 2c's are on it's way out :tears:

Those look to be in great condition and that's nice you found a walnut veneer pair. There were optional bases for them and it you search L1090 you should find photos of mine with the bases attached. They were painted black and made of MDF with a groove and opening for the speaker cables. You can take a paint brush and brush off the dust from the woofers. Don't do anything to the sticky dome tweet and mid. Are those your grills sitting on the floor? What color are they? They should be black. ADS is known for producing speakers with tight bass.

Also search for the thread on my S700's. Soundmotor posted the details on how they were designed and info on the tweets. The tweets in the S700 might be different and better than the ones in the S600 but I can't remember for sure.

Terrific thread...

Being a fairly recent ADS convert, I waded through all 14 pages of this thread this morning and thoroughly enjoyed it...thanks to the OP and all who contributed; great reading.

Duff: I actually did not find these speakers, it came to me looking for a home. :D I took canned air to the woofers, and was going to take a brush to the domes. Thanks for the warning! What the heck A/D/S? Was there a purpose to using sticky fly-paper material? Physically the cabinets have nicks and scratches all over, though all the drivers appear to be in good working condition. Yes, I thought the warped foam base was cheezy and yes those are the metal covers. My friend had painted it white, to match with the backgound wall. This was my first experience with A/D/S floor standers, and will not be my last... The S700's have better tweets than the S600's? I must hear. Like MCP1, thanks for everyone's contributions.

A light sanding with 100 then 200 grit sandpaper followed by 2-3 coats of tung oil will have them looking brand new. Do the domes sound sweet? Then don't worry about the sticky domes, it's there for a reason.

Duff: Yes, the domes sound sweet, must not be bothered by the stickiness... :) Thanks for the info on the woodwork!

I saw that the model 700 was added.....my humble, mindblowing pair lapping up their nakamichi stasis juice...in the bedroom....ready to breathe hollographic fire upon request... BUT....save my double vision...I have not seen my cherished 10 inch 3way ADS L990 towers on the lists.....my god, the most power hungry things I have run into.....it takes a mountain of power to show what their capable of.....I am dreaming Odyssey Strattos right now....some day....

a/d/s L780/2

These are 3-way 8" woofer, 8ohm, 100 watts.
I'm not sure how they are different from the original L780, but they sound great.

There was a local to me pair of L990's in Houston on Ebay which ended yesterday. If I had not acquired the 1090's I'd probably gone for it. http://cgi.ebay.com/A-D-S-990L-Pair-Loudspeakers-No-Reserve-/130474383624?pt=Speakers_Subwoofers&hash=item1e60e11908 Was $138 bucks a deal?

I'm not sure about the 2nd version of the 1090 but the 1st version has a switch on the bottom (behind the fuse cover) to change tweeter attenuation. Mine sound better balanced with the tweeter set on the lower setting.

I got a pair of ADS L-690 that I picked up but I the speaker is loose, looks like the glue they used don't last very long. Anyone know how to fix this problem or know what glue to use? I unscrewed the screws that hold the metal plate but its not coming off? I'm thinking I can carefully loosen the speaker from the glue and clean the surroundings and apply fresh glue. But, I'm not too sure if this is the right step.

And, one tweeter is dirty lol. But, it sounds excellent.
