You are definitely right about how it has not been all rosy. At first there was not as much pollution and such. Now it is everywhere. And also now people don't even produce anything. They do things like "social media" which is just nonsensical crap on a server somewhere. The fact that someone can get rich by doing something like that says a lot about where we are these days.

Well, considering that 2026 will probably go down as the hottest year on record...

I fell like I have been baked to a crisp this year. Day after day of temperatures over 90 degrees. That is not normal at all for Colorado. And now it is September and we are still having hot days (not quite as hot as last month but still hot). Also at night it really is not getting as cool as it had before. I remember when I first moved to Colorado and when Labor Day rolled around it would get down into the 40s at night. This past Labor Day I think it only got down to the low 60s...

It was only about 10,000 years ago that North America was covered in mile high ICE, so yeah, the climate is always changing. Ok, the good news is that WITHIN our pathetically short lives, the change will not be all that dramatic.

Yes, surveillance capitalism is a facet of the larger goal of extraction from the flock. Financialization of everything is the most recent FRONT opened up on the war against the sheep. Rents, subscriptions, fees, penalties, interest, gambling, online loan-sharking.

You are still missing the big picture. Population growth curve is still exponential indicating healthy biosphere. Technology has increase productivity which increases available resources. That is the direct benefit of the IR. If somehow you are arguing against IR, you are arguing against humanity itself. That is the primary flaw in all pessimism discussions.

One of the top researchers at Anthropic resigned today, stating that without proper controls AI might wipe out the human race within 10 years. As a retired research engineer, I think he is correct. In fact, I'm not sure we aren't past the point of "proper controls". Especially with the scale-up of quantum computing.

I worry because here in the High Desert we had one of the mildest summers in a long time. Last summer was as well. We used to have snow every winter. Not anymore. It’s worrisome to me.

pessimism is considered an emotion in psychological frameworks, specifically defined as a secondary emotion. According to Plutchik’s model of emotions, pessimism is formed by the combination of two primary emotions: anticipation (or expectancy) and sadness.

I'm not discussing emotional states of mind when I describe how the I.R. changed directions and became an enemy of humanity, I'm discussing the extant condition of the world as it is based on demonstrable measures today that anyone--pessimist or optimist--can evaluate through simple empiracal methods. I can't make anyone pursue them, if they are not inclined. I'm pretty sure that if someone said, "There's a nasty war going on in Ukraine," you would not reply, "You're a pessimist", would you?

By nature, I'm an optimist and always have been. I'll spare you the long personal saga that demonstrates and verifies my optimism, but it has nothing to do with the global condition of humanity or the Industrial Revolution.
