It is a small world, I just took a stab.
This is Brian. I picked up those Time Window 3s for my brother in law this past year.
I know they are being appreciated and they are enjoying being pampered.
So I am heading up there in a coupe weeks - I will no doubt be dropping in at RPM.
I met up with djnagle on here a couple days ago and come to find out he is my brother in law's
cousin. So he is taking me to the SMAC meeting in a couple weeks. I just know I am going
to love learning more about this great hobby. I really want to start working on gear and getting
comfortable with delving into it.

Well I recently acquired a pair of them and have been searching for info on them. All I could find was this site and this thread. So I registered and was finally able to post as of last night.

But the pair I have are MODEL 12 and sound very nice. I was told they cost over $750 when they were bought. I am very happy with the condition they are in especially the surrounds as they seem new accept for some markings on the enclosures and the missing foam for the grills.

If anyone can point me in the right direction for information on these it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, this is an older thread that I need to revive. I hope it isn't considered Hi-jack!

I have a set of AMC model 12 speakers which I have unfortunately done in to a degree. I tested a sine wav thru them and it sounded square. So I took the grills off and the cones, foam are all fine. So I believe the 'coils' are bad. Something behind that actual cone. I unscrewed the driver (woofer) and it was stuck in there with some putty. I wonder if the wires burnt out... But there is a metal box with almost cloth sides (thick) and I wonder if this is where the coil is hidden.

I know nothing of vintage speakers and want to fix these. I feel stupid for ruining them but what can you do.

Anyone out there have some knowledge of these wonderful speakers? They seriously have sounded great in the past and I want to restore them. I think the mids, tweeter as well might be blown. One speaker is more intact than the other too, but both are compromised.

American monitor was a house brand of speakers sold by a major audio/appliance retail chain known as Fretter Inc. They were based in the southeast Michigan area. They were in business from the mid 60s and went defunct in 1996. I worked there for 13 years and sold many AMC speakers. I've never heard of these speakers being sold anywhere else.

Any relation to American Acoustic? Those were a house brand for American TV (TV Lenny) out of Madison and Milwaukee. You'd go in there and the commissioned sales reps would try and steer you towards them because their markup was huge compared to other national brands.

So true. That was the situation with AMC. BIG commission on them. Sell 'em a cheap receiver and a cheap turntable and max out the speakers.

I bought my first audio system in 1978 - Pioneer SX-950 receiver, Pl-520 turntable, Sony TCK7II cassette deck, and American Monitor 14 speakers. Not bad for a 19 year old kid starting out, but unfortunately it’s all gone…except the speakers!!! Still got ‘em and they still rock. Looking for specs if anyone has them. P.S. bought them from Lehman Electronics in Indiana, so they were sold by other dealers.

I only hear of them because i picked up a nice pair of 12xp cabinets yesterday. I saw they had CTS Phenolic ring tweeters in them so i grabbed them to use the two pairs of tweets for other speakers projects im restoring but when i picked them up they were allot nicer than i thought so i may keep them intact and restore the finish. I added some new fabric to the grills just so they look neat while i play with them for a while to decide if im going to keep them or find them new homes. After a couple hours of playing them they sound really nice to me. They have better low end than allot of this style of speaker cabinet ive heard.

I’ve owned American Monitor AM-14 speakers for nearly 50 years. Love the sound and they’re still rocking’.
