Bought an Onkyo M-510, but...

If I'm not mistaken the M-510 also used output transformers. Is that correct or am I thinking of some other amp?

In phase transformers, which sought to even out the waveform of the incoming ac by essentially filling in the on and off nature of ac. Meant to smooth out the power delivered to the L&R channels. Lamps, relays, pretty much everything else had its own 5th transformer. But no transformers on the actual speaker taps.
Correction needed here, the in phase transformer serves to even out the charge wave phase, so as to present the amplifier stages with "even phase power, voltage and current."
It battled bass smear and IMD. Works quite well, check out a white paper on their "real phase" transformers.

OK. I probably read something by someone who assumed that the other transformers were output types, not knowing their actual function. The internet: The perfect medium along with television, for transmission of both truth and fallacy.

This, the M-L10, and the Yamaha MX-10000 are the prettiest of the stereo meter amps from Japan IMO. Honorable mention is the SE-A3Mk2.
Personally for me, the eye-candy Japanese amp is the MX-2000. Beautiful proportions, symmetry, lines, textures, colours and materials.

Well I cut a deal with the gentleman, it's a one owner amp, has had all the small caps exchanged at an Onkyo repair facility due to them being dried out. It's also in pretty excellent shape overall.
I'm pretty psyched because it will allow me about 90% of the performance of the Stax without having to fire them up for everyday listening. The onk runs at a very reasonable temp, and is generally as reliable as the JVC M-L10.

Very nice! When do you expect to have it in your possession? Chomping at the bit yet? ;-)

Probably a week or so. It's 142 lbs lol. It'll also give me a chance to de-commission the M-L10 so I can send both cases out for a refinish. The tech still needs to have me drop the 3 things off to him for repairs of varying levels, then another grandaddy project, my Accuphase P-600 needs to be rescued from a different tech in NJ, where it's been for 15 years. He gets to finish that too.

15 years! Yikes! Why so long? When my previous tech had my two JVC pieces for 10 months, I thought that was rediculous! What Are the other two pieces? I know one is the P-L10.
Careful lifting that 510!

I will have the M-L10 case done completely too. I discovered haze on the sides of it, and decided to pull the plug and do both cases professionally.
Yeah I kept forgetting the Accuphase P-600, it was given to me free in as is condition with a new transformer(!) installed. It's a good amp and will sell for good$$ when done, I have no intention of keeping it as of now.

That's a hell of an amp as well, and for free! You're hanging with the right people!

I prefer the SE-A3 as it doesn't have those fancy flashy LEDs at the front.
Here's mine:

Otherwise, one'd also have to mention the SE-A1, SE-A5(MK2), SE-A70, SE-A100, SE-A3000/5000/7000 and SE-R1.
Aaaand, of course, the SE-10000.

Edit: sorry for thread-hijacking; if required I'll take down the picture.

^^^ No flashy LED's on the onk either, that's essentially a timer, they call it a "waiting monitor". The amp raises the transistor bias upon startup, when all the LED's are lit, the preheat bias returns to the normal operating range. Serves to shorten warmup time.
If you ever get the chance, try the M-510. I think you'd be pleased.
And yes, I really like the Technics big bad boy amps too. Almost bought an SE-A3 Mk2 years ago.

Well okay, of course one cannot deny that the build quality of the M510 is actually quite above the SE-A3, even the A3MK2. One just has to consider this bad boy as one of the absolute holy grails, alongside the Yamaha MX-10000, Technics SE-A1 and probably Rotel RB-5000. Yet my heart still beats for Technics when it comes to audio gear. I also would never be able to afford something like an M510 (I would, but I wouldn't want to do so as I'm totally satisfied with my little beast). Of course, I'd never say no to listening to an M510. If only they had made a matching preamp…
So all the best luck to find a solution for the missing board! I would honestly consider having a substitute manufactured for you, as the components themselves are usually still produced to date, resp. substitutable with something else.

Hey thanks. The missing board amp is long gone, I sold it for a small profit and said bye after a year. The one I am after now is a complete amp, ready to play.
The Technics A-3 mk 1&2 have very good builds. Lots of support under the transformers, and cast aluminum all around the outside. They're very well made!
