Calling All Yamahas. Time to Post Your Pics

btw, I read recently that the Yamaha "ortophonic" headphones were made under license - I can't remember from whom at the moment but it was an american name.
Axel, if you can find where you read that, please let me know.

Here I proudly present, which will be hopefully the next step for completing my collection of (all) V-Fet amplifiers (ever made).

The mighty B-1 ! :smoke:

The unit seems to be in a musem grade condition ! How :screwy: am I to pay $1100 for it ?

No doubt about it......you're nuts. But, in a very positive way. :thmbsp: I, for one, will be interested in your comparison to the B-2 (have you recapped your B-2? - makes a difference). And, that is not simply a B-1, it includes the UC-1 interface unit, as well. A bit on the high side (by USA pricing) but what can you do? You have to have it. Congratulations!

Got to like that red glow on those meters. I'm going to put in some red LEDs in place of the bulbs in a B-2 and see what it looks like. Or blue. And then tell people it is the best sounding McIntosh ever made. :D

Glenn,

sorry, no B-2 in the house to date  As all good Germans, I start with B-1, then comes B-2 and then B-3 ... like V1, V2, V3 (OK bad joke !)

The B-2s are also quite expensive in Europe.

A few months ago you saw them going away for about 200 EUR, but this seems to be history. The B-2 market drys out in Europe. Nowadays you are asked to pay 500 EUR for a unit with a missing knob and hundreds of scratches and bumps.

I never saw a B-2 in Europe in a mint condition. The few samples of the B-1 I ever saw, where also adorned with heavy wear. It seems, as if the big VU meters and austere black design had a bad influence on second hand owners in the mid 80ies. They probably thought this is cheap DJ equipment and treated them as such ...

If you want to have the original copper colour I would suggest to use RGB-LEDs. If you mix some turquoise (25%green, 10% blue) with the red, you will have this nice natural glowing color, but much brighter ...

I will do some comparisons, especially with my Sony TA-N7B, which has got now an extensive upgrade, allowing 4 Ohm loads and even better sound. The B-1 might have big troubles to come close to or even to surpass it. But let´s see, what happens. My ears are ready for shootout !

Is that 2SK75 another small VFET like we discovered recently in the TA-5650? Anyone have the B-2 service manual/parts list? With the ability to select five (5) different sets of speakers on the B-1 it is VERY busy inside. One of my far too many audio projects this next year is to strip one of my B-2 amps down to direct inputs and outputs for a single signal and by-pass all the extraneous controls it has.

Mirko - You should have a good time playing with the B-1.

bolly - think that M-2 could easily be my favorite Yamaha bi-polar amp. Going to have to find one to see. If nothing else it would do a great job of driving a sub, I'll bet. It looks very much like a consumer version of their bi-polar pro amps like the 2200, etc.

junkaudio,

thank you very much for the link ! Here one can see, what can happen with a B-1 !

.... reminds me of "The Abominable Dr. Phibes" (You might know the German title ...).

Coaled PC Boards, bad caps etc. etc. Thank you, this encourages me to spend (all) my money in a B-1 !
