cheapest speaker made in the last 10 years that can beat any speaker made before 1970?

This question needs way more explanation. What does exactly does it mean for one speaker to "beat" another? Heavier? Bigger? Louder? More bass? More treble? More accurate? Prettier? More sales? More ohms? More drivers? More boxing championships?
I could go on...

Tom Brennan , gpa just clone from altec , it is the lowest price point to beat altec vott and the best before 1970?

I think so. Now, I haven't heard the GPA 604 but I assume it sounds as least as good as a 604E. And perhaps the cheaper ferrite version of the GPA 604 at $1799.00 sounds as good (or maybe better) than the alnico version. I used to own various VOTs including A7-500s and A5s, I also owned Model 19s, 605As and other Altecs. I now use 604Es with the stock crossovers and I think they sound very, very fine. Of course what's pleasing is subjective and there is no objectively best speaker from this era or any other; afterall, speaker designers don't even agree on what a perfect speaker should do, much less make one.

Note too that my current opinions on sound are affected by my being 74 years old with a drastic loss of ability to hear frequencies over 9000 hz. My 604s could have top end sound like a skilsaw and I wouldn't know it.

Well since you included the key word "any" speaker made before 1970...the list of modern speakers last 10 years that are the "cheapest" would run neck and neck. A lot of budget speakers from that era pre 70 found there way to the dump just like the past 10 years worth of budget speakers have.

With out the Op stating What is the power source?
How big is your Room?
Type of Music?
And Most importantly What is your top budget???
This thread should just End:rockon: without all these Questions answered.
One more thing, are you willing to move said speakers around to fine tune them?
Or will your sig other say NO?

A bit click baity of a topic.

But, yes I do think so. With CAD tech, decent sounding speakers can be made inexpensively vs the inexpensive speakers of the 1970s that didn't have a lot of engineering in the design.

Yep…

Does the OP mean what is the minimum would it cost to buy the speaker that was made in the last 10 years that would sound better than any and every speaker made before 1970? That’s the way I read it.

My response is that I could spend about $5,000 on a set of modern speakers that would surpass anything made before 1970. There are many choices. But:
  • I have not heard all the speakers made before 1970.
  • I have not heard most of the speakers made in the last 10 years.
  • What speaker I think beats any other speaker is massively subjective.

@WillVT yes , just sound more audiophiler ,, sound instrument more separated , the sound more dynamic , frequency response more flat ,,,,,, thanks for everyone who have responded!

I appreciate your thread, but maybe the title or details could have been stated more clearly? There have been numerous good speakers made over the years, but your thread was maybe not stated precisely enough to get more detailed responses?
WTF do I know? I love vintage gear for the price, sound, construction, and so on. I know there are many newer speakers available that are better, but no hunt and excitement about the purchase! If you love music then purchase what you consider to be awesome or collectible, to many people have opinions and seem to stick with them... :beerchug:

Also, not dissing new, but there is a price point where they are actually pretty darned good compartitively...

@mythless it should can beat the pre 1970 with powerful conputer today but alot of people here say there is noway ,, why? ,,,, anyway thanks to all who responded here!

@Semanon yes it is, lowest price speaker in the last 10 year that can beat any speaker pre 1970 ,,,,thanks for all who replied here!

Thats easy. Klipsch Jubilee. Thats the only thing that can beat a JBL Hartsfield or a EV Patrician 800 or a Klipsch Corner horn or an Altec Magnificat or a Stacked Pair of Mcintosh ML-4 C. Unfortunately my Bozaks Concert Grands come up 5 to 6 db dynamically short and need added super tweeters, which I have, and need to reach another half octave lower. There was a gent a Dallas that doubled the size of the enclosures and the Grands could reach 16 HZ.

The Jubilee's are bargain compared to other top pf the line speakers that easily cost over $250,000. They are only $40,000 a pair before you start negotiating.

@twiiii what make dynamically short? i dont undrtstand ,, the surround not elastic again? ,,, thank you for whoever answer in this thread!
