And this is why tripods have 3 legs rather than 4.

Conceptually, directly into the wood is the best coupling .. but yeah most folks tend to use something to protect the wood.
Built rigid stands for a set of Maggies once, filled them with sand and spiked them directly in to the hardwood floors of the Victorian house that I had at the time ..
The Magnapan's sounded wonderful and you couldn't see the very small hoes that the spikes left ... but I made the spikes long and thin, and Maggie's are relatively light.
I spiked directly to the floor in every house I have lived in with wood or carpet. I had the rubber cups under the spikes for the one that had tile.

No, that's due to the name or respectively the prefix - i.e., the tri- from the Latin tres/tria for three. So a tripod has 3 legs, because otherwise it wouldn't be a tripod.

Ahhh, too bad - as I was hoping for a further inquiry, so that I could have explained, that the Morgan 3Wheeler also wouldn't be the Morgan 3Wheeler, if it had four wheels. Whereas the Reliant Robin, while also a threewheeler, isn't that due to its name, but foremost for giving Jeremy Clarkson the opportunity to demonstrate, what a maldesign it is.

I know there are different theories on this, but I've never quite understood the idea of spikes with rubber cups. Other than issues with uneven floors, how is that different than just rubber feet? Is there something about the cone shaped spikes that affects vibrations? My understanding was that spikes were to penetrate carpet to couple with the floor, and not "float" on top of the carpet. Or to kind of grab onto something like a wood floor to prevent sliding and ensure coupling, that imperfections in the floor and speaker base might prevent.
Spikes AND rubber cups seem like opposing ideas. Rubber would seem to decouple and absorb vibrations, whereas spikes couple? What am I missing?

Most feet come as both, mine went both ways. Spikes for carpet and wood and the included rubber feet "adapters" for other hard surfaces.

just telling you what the instructions with speaker feets I have bought said.And it may but you still have the weight of the speaker concentrated on 4 small points with the rubber.
It would appear to me that there's no difference at all.
I think a lot of it is just fashion, received wisdom and marketing.
Speakers without spikes = non-audiophile.
Speakers with spikes = audiophile.

That said they did help a lot in the Tiny House listening loft. that floor was like a giant guitar body, the spikes and supplied rubber feet really helped.

I would think they would function in some ways like these.

I use them with carpet spikes. So you have coupling to a floor, but with an isolation component to the implementation.
