Cool American military planes.

Republic P-47 Thunderbolt

One of my faves. Pilots loved 'em for good reason. A 10,000 pound fighter that could fly at 440 mph, about the same speed as the P-51, but with much shorter range. One of the toughest aircraft of WWII. Lots of amazing stories of them flying with damage most other aircraft could not sustain and keep flying. Ask Lucky Wright, who flew one with an 8" diameter hole in one of the prop blades. The A-10 is named Thunderbolt for a reason.

The P-47 Thunderbolt took on the ze Luftwaffe, a most formidable foe.

The American bombing campaign against the Germans was arguably most useful not for the bombing it did but by forcing the German fighters up to defend against the bombers, which served two purposes--it diverted Luftwaffe resources away from the vital Russian Front (about 75-80% of the German soldiers killed in the war were killed by the Soviets) and it forced the German fighters up to fight battles with the American fighters that wrecked the Luftwaffe and gave the Allies control of the air by mid 1944, which paid off with the generally excellent ground support the Allied armies were given by their air forces.

B-52 ALCM load.
B-52H bombers carry six AGM-86B or AGM-86C missiles on each of two externally mounted pylons and eight internally on a rotary launcher, giving the B-52H a maximum capacity of 20 missiles per aircraft. AGM-86B (thermonuclear) -86C (conventional)

You all might enjoy this story. Some years ago I attended my son's graduation from USAF NATO flight school in Texas. It's a tradition that only a pilot can pin wings on a new pilot so the instructors did most of the pinning that day. There was one exception when an elderly gentleman stepped on stage. He proceeded to pin the wings on a pilot from Germany. It was announced that the older gentleman was his grandfather. After the ceremony I learned that the grandfather was a former Luftwaffe pilot who flew an ME109 during WWII. I got to hang out with some of the pilots from Germany and it shouldn't have been surprising that when they returned home they would be flying MIG's.
