Coronavirus Is Evolving

Now, break it down further into the percentage of people over 65 who have caught Covid-19 and didn't survive. Being a member of that group (over 65, not the "didn't survive" part) it's a number I'm far more interested in.

Minus deaths in nursing homes would give you a better number of your real world risk.

The death totals don't reflect the predicament we're in. With a population in excess of 300M, 250K deaths might seem insignificant. What happens as C19 goes through the population is the health care system gets strained. Hospitals fill up as health care workers burn out, quit or get sick themselves. Pretty soon, the hospital's ability to treat all patients begins to degrade.

It's not just about who gets sick and who ultimately dies. It's about how badly our health care system gets affected, procedures that get postponed, etc. You and your family gets sick and it consumes resources that could otherwise be used to treat others. So risky behavior may not greatly impact the risk taker but there are reprocussions throughout the system. The news today on the infections isn't good. In two weeks it will be worse. And to think its well past nov3rd.

Unless you have a plan to lock down and isolate the 16.6% (over 65 with comorbidity) you have to do something to reduce viral spread (symtomatic and asymptomatic). Telling younger people to just have at it isn't going to cut it. Locking people over 65 in their homes isn't going to cut it. You thought masks were an infringement??

Percentage of total population doesn't tell the whole story. Let's go with some numbers that may mean a lot more, especially to those closest to the victims ...

These are the documented, nationwide actual mortality impacts from COVID-19 data (aggregated from all U.S. states and the District of Columbia) for all race groups (last updated 12NOV20) :
  • 1 in 875 Black Americans has died (or 114.3 deaths per 100,000)
  • 1 in 925 Indigenous Americans has died (or 108.3 deaths per 100,000)
  • 1 in 1,275 Latino Americans has died (or 78.5 deaths per 100,000)
  • 1 in 1,325 Pacific Islander Americans has died (or 75.5 deaths per 100,000)
  • 1 in 1,625 White Americans has died (or 61.7 deaths per 100,000)
  • 1 in 2,100 Asian Americans has died (or 47.6 deaths per 100,000
