Critters

Good-sized Northern Pacific rattlesnake... looks about 7 years old.

Was he advertising or running in stealth mode? I read the other day that in some places, they're seeing rattlesnakes that have stopped warning as a natural response from being around people more often, meaning the ones that rattle are more likely to be seen & killed. Apparently they're evolving away from that behavior as an evolutionary adaptation. And, because of that, along with the steadily growing encroachment of people into areas where rattlesnakes are found, more snakebites are happening. Classic example of why people shouldn't just kill things indiscriminately, tends to work against you sooner or later.

I found this guy in my yard. When I tried to get him, he coiled up tightly into a ball, and his tail was hidden. He pulled his head down hard into the coiled ball, and it pushed out his jowls. Its markings were similar enough to a rattler, which also I've found multiples of in the yard as well; so I didn't touch him until I could better identify it.
After doing some research, I ID'd it as a Night Snake, which are fairly common, though not frequently seen, due to their nocturnal habits.
This guy is from, Fallbrook, northern San Diego County, Ca..

A rare visitor to the park outside our door this morning. Scared all the geese away, but the crows were highly upset...and vocal.

Happy trails,
Larry B.

One of the best ways to attract birds to your yard is to put up a suet feeder. I'm having to put a new cake out almost daily......
