My daughters new Bunnie fresh from the vet where she had her lady bits removed. We adopted her from the pound so spaying is mandatory which is fine with me.

Her name is Muffin.

Thanks

Eric

My daughter snapped this shot. The rabbit is very sweet.

Those old primes are lovely, much better than the kit lens that came with the camera. I was actually about 3 or 4 yards away from the birds when shooting them, a reasonable distance. I couldn't get any closer unless I did not mind stepping into the water.

When I got my Sony NEX-5R, I didn't bother getting the kit lens, just the body. I got an FD adapter so I could use my Canon A-1 lenses. I did comparisons between my EF 50mm 1.4 and FD 50mm 1.4....and they look nearly identical. I say nearly because the FD legacy doesn't have rounded blades and there is a little bit of dust in bokeh halos.

"Real World" differences are non-existent. I pretty much shoot with my 50mm 1.4. I might use the 20mm 2.8 if I need to get closer/wider to subjects. I have 85mm 1.8 and 70-210mm with macro that I use occasionally too.

I also own a Canon A1 though it hasn't been used for ages. I bought it brand new together with the FD 50mm F1.4 lens and later I got a few more lenses as well. I really enjoy using the 50mm/1.4 and the 50mm/3.5 macro on my Nex 5N and Panasonic Lumix DMC-G3.

What I find funny is that I have the FD 70-210mm 4.0 and I also have the EF 70-200mm 4L for my Canon DSLR. I did a comparison between the two...and I was surprised to find out that they, again, were near identical in sharpness. I truly expected the "red ring" lens to be quite a bit sharper, but that just wasn't the case. I think the "luxury" lens really really only outperforms in it's smooth auto focusing (comparing to other AF lenses, I mean).

Modern AF lenses don’t necessarily perform better than their old manual siblings as I also confirm that after I have compared some old Minolta MC/MD lenses to their Minolta/Sony AF equivalent ones, however the AF lenses are easier and more convenient to use.

I'd say it depends on what your subject is. Most people who don't know anything about photography just want the camera to "do its thing" and be done with it. Some people who pay lots of money on DSLR's and AF/IS expect to use the features they paid for (I'd agree). I do this with major photo shoots or fast moving subjects where I don't have time to manually focus.

Even if I did have the kit lens for the Sony NEX, I'd still shoot predominantly manual because there's an element of control that I like that AF doesn't have. I get to choose if I want to focus on the nose or eyes (or fuzzy feet) of my pets...or choose to focus on which one of the knobs/lights on my audio gear because often times, the AF doesn't choose properly (unless I do single point AF, obviously).

And to make sure this isn't going off topic, here's a photo of a bouncing squirrel:

I certainly agree.

The pictures below were taken a few years ago with a Minolta MC 135mm F2.8 lens in conjunction with a macro adapter. I don’t think I could have shot those images with an AF lens because the hoverfly was so tiny and flying in the air, an AF lens would simply keep hunting and trying to get the hoverfly into focus.
