I've always thought spiders to be fascinating creatures. This one is no larger than the nail on your pinky finger but no doubt is a fearsome monster in the bug world.
Disaster strikes only 5 hours after the above photo was taken. Not only did I take the photo of the doves, I also took photos of the cactus itself to show some out of town friends via email.
10 am in the morning:
Disaster!!
2 PM later that afternoon I was taking a nap and heard a huge crash. I ran to the front of the house and this is what I saw. :tears:
The weight of the arms facing to the south were too heavy for the 23' - 2000-3000lb. cactus and pulled it to the ground. The arm by the car weighs about 300lbs. or more and missed by a half an inch or less! I planted the saguaro 15 years ago and it was very healthy without any disease and it was in a upright position with no lean whatsoever. If it had to come down it couldn't have found a better spot. It would have destroyed the car or cause severe damage to the house or even killed somebody. It damaged nothing!
I searched for the baby dove to no avail, but later that day I was cleaning debris in the front yard when I startled a small dove in the river run, it flew into the side of my neighbors house fell down & flew up on top of my roof. I believe I might have provoked his first flight ever.
