no, but your use of the word "improvement" is confusing. If it does the job properly, it should be exactly the same.
The Deer Creek website claims it’s an improvement over the original equalizer. As do many of the user reviews on their site. Just looking for some objective validation from another source.

What improvements do the claim? If it doesn't match the slope of the original than it's just another equalizer playing off the Bose name.. I'm surprised Bose hasn't taken action.
OK, I checked the web site and it does emulate the curves of the various models. I guess the "improvements" would be the additional processing they allow but, in their most basic configuration, will do what the original eq did,

Being able to be used with the various models is a plus if you need a 901 EQ. But I agree if you have the original, and its working, it really isn't needed. If it does have several different curves that can be selected, it might be fun to play with them, but the original EQ should work best I would think.

If you use the pre out to feed the eq, you need to feed the eq's output directly to the main amp.
tape out to eq then back to the tape in will work fine.

Not sure pre out to direct in will work because I think direct in is a source input you must select. It's not always "listening" like a main in is.
So, in that case, say you selected tuner as the input. Tuner will be routed to pre out and go to the EQ but the receiver will not be looking for the return signal from the EQ at the direct in (because tuner is the selected input). It only looks for input at direct in when direct in is selected as the source.
It might work in the tape connections but the caveat is many AVR, while having tape connections, do not have true tape monitor loop. You'll need to consult the owner manual to see if that unit has any true tape monitor loops.
