Denon DP80 & DP75 Owner's Thread

And on a DK-2300 it is an even bigger battleship--it won't fit on my wall shelf as now constituted. Unfortunately, my DP75 fell down a tech's memory hole as tried and failed to fix its runaway speed problem. Maybe I will try another since I have the plinth . . .
Get in touch with Peter Noerbaek. He fixed my brain-dead DP-80 and it should now be good for the rest of my days. https://pbnaudio.com/peter-noerbaek/

fiddle. I love that turntable, the plinth and both of the arms. A mighty fine Japanese DD implementation.

I adore it - can you tell? Probably the happiest project in my audio history. It really is a joy to work with and I am spoiled rotten! ;)

I believe there are 2 platter variations: one with 3 screws per spring and one with 5. I thought that the DP-80 came with one and the DP-75 came with the other, but I forgot which. Could someone please enlighten me? :)

Recommend staying with just the stock Denon mat, info from Denon states mat was specifically designed to go with the sprung platter and not an afterthought, mat is quite thick and heavy.

All of my 80's have 3 screws per spring.
Thank you for the info, that is interesting! The DP-80 I just purchased has the 5 screw platter. My guess is that they started shipping the 80 with the same 5 screw platter as the 75 once it was introduced in 1980.

Are you guys using just the stock mat, the stock mat & another mat or only a new mat?
I was using just the stock mat for a long time and then was loaned a 3mm Funk Acromat to try out. I tried the Acromat by itself and it wasn't a great success, but stacked on the stock mat there was a very noticeable improvement, especially when using a clamp. Upper bass and mids were cleaner and more open and resolution was up a titch as well.

I've been working on my DP80 for about a year now, happy to say it's done and I love it. The plinth is the Solid 2 v2 from Acoustand Audio in the UK. I love their sliding tonearm mounting system with the spindle to pivot ruler markings engraved on it, makes setting up an arm super easy. I measured after setting it to 295mm per the markings and it's dead on. Great idea from Acoustand and really well executed. He was also able to find me the exact Egyptian blue acrylic sheet I wanted for the top plate of the plinth. It came out exactly as I hoped it would.

The arm is the Audio-Technica AT-1100 I posted earlier in the thread with the final version of my custom 12in carbon fiber swappable arm tube and CNC cut aluminum headshell with 3D printed finger lift. Currently have an AT33sa on the installed tube with two more 12in arm tubes ready to go. One with a Denon 301mkII mounted and the other with an AT-170ML OCC mounted.

I'm beyond thrilled with it all and can confidently say I'm set with regard to my turntable, arm, and cartridge selection for the foreseeable future. This is the best I've ever heard vinyl and the whole thing is such a joy to use and look at :) Huge thanks for the tips and encouragement from everyone in the thread. I've had a blast reading about your projects and looking at the great pictures, so glad to finally be able to post my completed project!

I've seen the sliding tonearm mounting system on Acoustand & Dr. Feickert and I don't understand how it's not industry standard on turntable plinths. You can put any tonearm of any length with no need to cut holes, change & fabricate new armboards.

Congrats on your setup, great work on the arm and nice choice of plinth. I've been researching about the DP80 for the past year, of everything I've seen so far the Acoustand solid plinth 2 V2 is my favorite plinth, unfortunately out of my price range. With shipping & customs fees it would cost more than the motor so I'll probably stick with a Denon plinth. If money was no object I'd love to order a two arm plinth from them with the sliding tonearm system.

Yes......... that Acoustand plinth is very tasty and quite expensive. Like KostasP, more $$ than I wish to afford and likely won't fit on my TT shelf. However, money no object................

A possiblre alternative is the "SME like" http://mockingbirddistribution.com/groovemaster-ii-tonearm/ adjustable TA base that Mockingbird distribution offers. Likely requires an insert to fit any particular TA other than the Groovemaster II. But, for a total of around $250, considerably less than the Acoustand or similar.

Thanks for the kind words guys :beerchug:

The Acoustand plinth did hurt the wallet a bit but it was cheaper than the price listed on their site since I went with the single tonearm version. When I bought it I had just sold 90% of my records to a local record store (I held back around 75 of my favorite/best albums) so I had some money in the hobby budget. I know, it sounds odd to have sold off nearly my entire record collection then put all this time and money into a new turntable. Those 75 or or so albums I held back I had intended to play on a cheaper table from time to time and mostly stream music but I couldn't do it. I saw this thread and all the great DP80 setups you guys had in here and started looking for a motor unit :rflmao:

I had nearly 1000 albums before the sell off and honestly it was too much for me personally. I'd sit and stare at the record shelves and have no idea what to play, it was overwhelming. I find it nicer to just have my favorite albums on the best possible pressings and for the collection to be much smaller. I have a little flip-through record bin on a separate shelf unit next to the wall-mounted DP80 shelf. It holds about 75 records so it's perfect. I've bought some more albums since the sell-off, another 20 or so, and I just rotate what's in the bin near the turntable.

Not Denon but instead Victor or JVC. It's a Japanese CL2P constrained layer plinth made for two arm boards. Since the constrained layer arm boards are hard to find I came up with my own system of interchangeable tonearms. The armboards were replaced with 3/4" thick aluminum plates that were machined to except 1/4 thick aluminum plates that are retained by (6) 10-32 machine screws. I can take the arm and plate off as a unit and swap in another one in 5 minutes and be ready to play.
