Denon DP80 & DP75 Owner's Thread

And dripping a bit of WD40 or penetrating oil and letting it sit a few minutes might help. And you're right to have stopped, brute force is never a solution. I don't agree about pulling up evenly — I rock it gently side to side to work it loose. That's just me.

Rocking seems to be the only way I've had success as well. Pulling straight up gets nowhere and it doesn't matter how long it has passed since one last did it.

I was referring to the ones I used in my DK plinth that I also sourced from a shop in Japan. I assume your holes are the same size. The what if scenario was just to say you have a fair amount of latitude in what to apply. ie as in an imperial size screw vs metric like I used worked just fine because tolerance here is not critical.
I understand, my apologies if I misunderstood you! Thanks for posting the picture of the screw, now I know what kind of screw it needs to be. The thing is, I need to figure out what metric screw size it would be. I am hoping to find them on a Japanese website and get them sent to the proxy shipper, so they can secure the motor unit to the plinth. Would it be an M4?

I’ve taken the platter apart to look at the foam. Surprisingly some of it seems to have held up fairly well. I’m going to replace it all with some weather stripping as recommended here. There don’t seem to be any springs though? I thought the split platter had springs as well as foam?

Very different from my DP80, which has a lot more foam damping.

Also, when putting the two-part platter back together, they won't automatically be centered, and thus imbalanced. I put business-cards in the gap, at four spots, so the two parts would be evenly spaced from each other. The cards are the right thickness. They're also the exact thickness for the gap between the magnetic strip and the tape read-head. Might as well check that too while in there.

But as stated, the DP80 is different.

I will do. And I saw your advice about the cards earlier which is helpful. Does your platter have springs? I don’t know if the 75 design is different or someone has opened this before and removed them. I’ve no idea how many people owned this turntable before me and information is scant.

Both my 80's have springs ( thin metal strips) between the two pieces. If it was not so hard to align perfectly I would take them apart again and take pictures.
That would be a big ask since it sounds very painful to redo. I wonder if they just fell out or if the 75 didn’t have them. Seems curious.

The foams on the left side plate on mine are brittle, should replace. What do folks recommend?
I’ve some weatherstripping coming from amazon tomorrow. Was very cheap. About $4. If it works for mine I’ll drop the link for you. Or maybe I can even mail some of what I get since there is something like ten foot of it. I’ll let you know when it comes.

Didn't cotton on to the fact that those metal strips could be springs. No way they could just fall out the way they are mounted, and hard to imagine some prior interloper not bothering to reinstall them. I did notice an alignment seal (like you see on mounting screws on tape heads) applied to the center screw of each screw bank, so yes proper alignment is clearly important.

And yes please feedback on that foam you're going to try.

Alignment, in this context, means centering, so the 2 parts of the platter are balanced. But what about "adjustment" of those leaf-springs? I'm introducing "adjustment" as a new idea here.

But first, a question — How do all you guys, who have a DP80, adjust your leaf-springs? There are 3, and each has 5 screws. When I got mine, all 5 were tightened down hard, on each of the 3 leaf-springs.

Is that how yours are? Did you get the TT untouched from the Factory? Did you get it serviced by a Tech? Have you adjusted the springs yourself?

A lot of DP80 owners never even knew that foam pads lurked within that sandwiched platter because they're hidden — and didn't know the foam rotted and had to be replaced.

Denon's two-part platter conceals a few mysteries, and the Service Manual doesn't say a word about it —so how should those springs be adjusted?

Screws on mine were tightened hard as well.

Differences between the 75 and 80 platters are interesting. Besides the springs question there`s the cored out versus solid center area, suggesting the 75 platter assy is much lighter mass overall as well. These models exhibit greater differences then generally recognized it appears.
