Dual 1009

Congrats on your 1009. Always liked the sound of a 1009. Fixed dozens. Before LPs made their comeback you get one for $50. Not anymore! Now that $140 is a good price. You got the German built base and cover too! Build quality is much better than the base and cover supplied by US distributor United Audio. Like on the 1214. Worked on several 1214s. Though not as rugged as the 1009, they don’t sound bad. I am using a cool dust cover like your 1009 on my 1219.

I remember the first 1009 I fixed up. Had it in my bedroom hooked to a Pioneer QX 949 paired to JBL 100s up front with Dynaco A25s on the rear. Put a Frank Sinatra LP on it. Sounded like he was singing at the foot of my bed! Really! Those 1009s are that good. Enjoy. Also, the headshells don’t give you problems.

I am married to 1219s. Have 2 one in the livingroom and bedroom. My favs. One is an early model and one is the later one. The 1219 in my avatar is dressed with the German built base and dust cover. Daily driver. Have two more bought in Germany. Record sizes in metric on those. One has the German base and the other a halfway decent US built United Audio base. It looked good in the box and fell apart when I removed it. Reglued it. At some point I will likely sell these. My bench table is a 1229 with my homemade motor! Has copper windings from a 1019 and the bearing from a 1219. Works, but it’s a little noisy. Your 1214 is a lower end Dual. While they are not bad, if you run it side by side against a 1219/1229 you should hear a difference. Did that with my 1010S and a 1219. Same cartridges (Shure M55s). The 1219 sounded much better. Music more alive. Sold off my 1215s. Brought in money for the 2 1219s. Have a Garrard Zero 92 I got to learn how to service them. They sound quite good. Was replacing a spark capacitor on my priced BSR 810 and broke the wires going to the tone arm. This is killing me. Brought in a 1249 for practice. Belt drive with a smaller motor than 1219/1229s. Replaced the spark capacitor on the power switch. Quiet on shut off. Needs a belt and a stuerpimple. As is it doesn’t sound bad. Not hard to work on, a plus. I like the looks of the 1219/1219s and the sound.

The 1229 is close. The bench table gets played the most in the shop. It cleaned up nice.

Which 1009???

Dual made three. The first was a 1009. No cue or antiskate. Its really a changer. Kind of crude but I love 'em. Got three. One on each system. Built around the mid sixties. Next came the 1009f around 1967. They added anti skate and a cue. Later Dual took away the pitch control and it became the 1009sk. All are made well. What ever one you got makes no difference. They are all good. Got a 1009f too. Sold the 1009sk. Bummer :thumbsdn: Had all three.

I know this is an old post, but just wanted to clarify: there’s 4 1009’s I believe. I have an 1009SK2.

Also, there is no belt in a Dual 1009 changer. It is idler drive. It also was the first automatic changer which could handle high compliance offerings in the era, like the original Shure M 44-G, M 44-7, the Empire offerings and ADC offerings. Before that, these were normally recommended for manual transcription tonearms only. Therefore, in 1964 when introduced, a revolution in automatic turntables/record changers. The 1009 cemented Dual's beginnings as the high end changer as Garrard began their slow decline from being "World's Finest"

Yes, you are correct. Interestingly this dates my Clairtone G2 MCM Stereo Turntable. Previous years had Garand TT, however my year they switched over to a Dual 1009.
