Econowaves, but which drivers?

Contacted Gainphile but no answer from him yet...

What if I do the XO of the Ewaves with a minidsp too as he did? Would that make it easier? Then I guess I should buy two 2x4 boards and stack them.
What do you think?

And where do I find the bolt-on to screw-on adapter?
 
Hi sorry I've been offline for quite sometimes.

PM answered!... in anycase the Celestions are very nice and surprisingly the xo was exactly the same as DE250 (scratching head). There were 3 pairs of ears and Paul and Roger were not very forgiving blokes when it comes to Compression driver sound (they hated D220Ti while I'm OK lol...)

In fact we ran DE250 on the left and Celestion on the right and it sounded the same.

I'll document DE250 xo soon ... just finished the selenium ones.

Gainphile, do you have raw measurements of Celestion CDX1-1745 on PT waveguide ?

I would like to play with it in PCD if it is ok with you :)

So, If I go with the Celestion I can use the crossover details on your blog. But what about crossover for the woofer? You used the Beta 12 but I will be using the Deltalite 2512, so are there any changes to crossover?
It seems like a 70l box tuned to 40Hz will be good for the Deltalite 2512? Could it be made smaller?

I'm planning on crossing them over to a pair of subs at maybe 60-70Hz, so could I get away with a smaller box for the Deltalites?

I don't want to go active between the tweeter and woofers, that will be passive. But for the XO between subs and ewaves I'll go active with a minidsp.

Thanks. Yes you can use "CD2" xo settings which is intended for B&C DE250. I was surprised at how close they were as per measurements:

For sure Eminence Beta and Deltalite are different, and will behave differently when put in a box. There are no easy way except to build and measure. Of course if anyone can loan me a Deltalite I'd be happy to design the XO :thmbsp:

Normally that's how it's done :D

If you can find anyone with nearfield measurement of Deltalite on sealed box, it's a 10 minutes job to come up with the biquad values.
 
G, i renamed it to .frd but it does not work. In PCD flat line appears instead frequency response. Are you sure you uploaded the right stuff ?

I will use the same waveguide for my Celestion, so using the same XO for the tweeter seems good.
But for the woofer he had back-mounted them in some sort of pre-assembled cabinet, AFAIK, and shouldn't that change it a bit?

I'll most likely be having this as a school project as well, so measuring and making my own XO isn't impossible. But do you have any suggestions?

You need to add 170 or so to the SPL column (because it is negative), which can be done by opening it in excel. I think you also need to have the phase unwrapped though, which would be a lot easier to do when exporting the data in the first place.
 
I'm not sure what PCD format looks like. But .frd is a text file which can be opened....? Basically frequency - magnitude - phase.
 
PCD uses frd files, but it is a little picky about them. Like I said, spl values need to be positive numbers, and I am pretty sure phase needs to be unwrapped (neither is the case in the file above).

I've done some calculating and it seems like it's cheapest to buy only filter components and waveguides from america and buy the woofers and tweeters from leanaudio.co.uk

At leanaudio the had a screw-on version of the CDX1-1745 called CDX1-1746, I expect they should behave exactly the same? Well, the waveguides I've chosen for the 1745 are http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=245-625 but they cost $35/each
The screw-on tweeter was about £10 more expensive than the bolt-on version but then I could buy a cheaper waveguide like this one http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=292-2572 What would give me the best sound? Is the more expensive waveguide superior to the pyle pro one?

And also, in his part list Zilch had added a pair of L-pads. How important are they? Do I really need them? Do you recommend that I buy them?
 
Did you try Elfa? They are in Sweden, and should have the components you need. If you don't use the variable L-pad, you need to install 2-resistors as a fixed L-pad. If you are measuring your drivers with a mic, you can calculate the values you need easily enough, but otherwise I think you'll want the variable L-pad.
 
I didn't try Elfa. I know they have lots of components but I'm such a beginner at electrics I don't trust myself in picking the right components (I've tried before for other projects and picked all wrong). It would be great if anybody with some experience could link the right stuff and I'll see if it gets any cheaper (having to only order the waveguides from america would rock).

I think I'll use the variable L-pad, it seems like an easier way out :P
