Eddie Van Halen Music Appreciation Thread

What a great clip ! Thank you .

So funny how the band has to show Ed where to look after the song is over - our guy's a player.

There's a youtube vid out there of GE Smith talking about how this performance came to be and how Ed was tormented by that little booboo at the end where the band cuts out. Said there was an earlier performance of the same song in rehearsal that was even better. Wonder if it sits in NBC's vaults?

I was born a bit too late to get a full appreciation of Van Halen's early impact on music...
But in 1992 I went on my very first date...
Had to meet my very first "girl's Father," Ted... Ted busted my balls relentlessly from the moment he greeted me at he door.
Quickly he asked: Do you like music?
and led me to the basement, where Ted had his HUGE Hi Fi and what seemed to me at the time, the BIGGEST speakers ever (Cerwin Vegas).
Ted sat me down.
Ted hit play and CRANKED the volume.

Runnin' with the devil...

Car horns fade.... duh duh duh duh..rhhhrrrrrrrrrrr
chest thumped, had to have been the loudest "system" I had heard up to that point... I felt it.

I knew two things in that moment:
1) Van Halen rocks (still do)
2) I didn't want to, ever, be "big speaker guy" (I became "big speaker guy")

RIP EVH

man...despite his legendary accomplishments and other incredible talents..the one thing that totally blew my mind was his tremolo picking. just effortless

he was from another planet...as Hendrix. if there were a Mt. Rushmore of guitarists he would surely be on it.
a great songwriter too
and his never ending pursuit of tone, tearing gear apart and experimenting with it.
the first album changed history

Probably the best geetar Eddie ever used @ his career.

A good friend of mine, who is from Hawthorne CA, was in some SoCal bands the same time Van Halen was starting out. One day his band at the time shared the stage with Van Halen. He said Eddie was so cool and a virtuoso guitar player even at such a young age. He still has the Shure SM-57 microphone Eddie happened to sing into that day. Just a phenomenal guitarist/musician gone way too soon!

Nice 80's live cut showing Ed's various skills; rhythm/ lead playing, cueing his brother when to start and stop the train while jumping around like a maniac. Those guys made a real racket for just a trio with a singer (who is 40 here and flying around, also). When the song opens up in the beginning there's a real whoooosh to it.

As this is an audio forum, I'm seeing Altec horns in those bass drum heads? I bet that stage was a loud place to be.

Chuck Klosterman notes:

"Van Halen is, in many ways, the high-profile exception to otherwise inflexible rules: classically trained virtuosos who make music for getting hammered in parking lots. A metal band that rarely plays metal. A legendary live act consistently criticized for their terrible live performances. A caricature of leering masculinity that proved unusually inclusive to female audiences. An embodiment of American exceptionalism, spearheaded by two Dutch Indo immigrants who could barely speak English when they arrived in Pasadena. There are simply no other bands like this. They were copied constantly and no one ever got it right."

And...you and the "daughter" got married, right? With the seal of that song!

I just like happy endings.

Great share this day, Ben!

Just read this day that Hendrix and Van Halen by many of their peers considered them as the best of the best.

Van Halen was also innovative in both his playing technique along with electric/structural modes in the guitar itself.

Just out there on a $150 guitar, screwing around and *killing*. You know that if the NYC stage band is applauding afterwards that this display was exceptional.

my fave lead vocal 'entertainer' - DLR
my fave drummer, the little guy's brother - AVH
my fave guitarist, the little guy himself - EVH
fave background singer - MA

I don't think I have ever seen any musician, let alone guitarist, look like they are having any more fun than EVH whenever/wherever he is playing guitar

Hate to be a downer but I just had to 'fact check" EVH.

I've heard/seen at least 2 different interviews yesterday where he claims "tablature" was invented because standard musical transcription couldn't be used to capture how he played.

I was always under the impression that it was invented to simplify "reading music" although I must admin I thought it was "invented" around the same time frame, IE 1970's.

Turns out according to wiki, it has been around since the 1300's!

fun fact: at one time in my life say 1982 or so.....my entire home audio system consisted of one little AM radio.
being mostly a hard rock classic rock fan that was not an ideal situation.
anyhow I managed to enjoy the local pop station...it was all I had....they played the usual early 80s hits...the one I remember the most was Electric Avenue by Eddie Grant ha ha
but the point of my post here...MJs Beat It started playing on the radio.....which later ended up being played A LOT

so back then I would just kinda grin and bear it....no disrespect everybody likes different things....
but when the guitar solo came up I was like "OMG THAT IS THE MOST RIDICULOUS SHAMELESS EDDIE VAN HALEN RIP OFF I HAVE EVER HEARD IN MY LIFE!!!!!
:p

I remember the tab for Tora Tora for one of the sounds was something like...."Gibson flying V with empty beer bottle sliding across neck pu magnets...."
