Eddie Van Halen Music Appreciation Thread

There's a youtube vid out there of GE Smith talking about how this performance came to be and how Ed was tormented by that little booboo at the end where the band cuts out. Said there was an earlier performance of the same song in rehearsal that was even better. Wonder if it sits in NBC's vaults?

For those who don't know, GE Smith was Hall & Oates' lead guitarist during their peak commercials years and was the bandleader of Saturday Night Live's band during much of the 80s and 90s....and ex-husband of Gilda Radner.

I saw him and H&O open for ELO . GE tore it up .

All my VH stuff is original press vinyl.

None on the USB stick I normally have on me.

I've been planning a listening party to spin all the albums all the way through, and burn to digital at the same time.

But I've been so danged busy supporting work at home IT at work and dealing with one sick and one dead cat at home, I haven't had 10 minutes since the passing.

I also have a new to me Megadeth "reverse tracking" EP to spin.

Saw VH at the War Memorial Coliseum in Ft Wayne back around 82. Made my way all the way to the front barrier. Bought a baseball T. Within a few days later they were playing 2 hours away at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis where I attended as well wearing my new T. Again, made my way to the front barrier. T was ruined by the painted plywood barrier so I shelled out another $20 for a new one. Love VH. Love Fair Warning. Prefer the DLR days over Sammy BUT I love Humans Being. Such an angry song that must be cranked every dang time.

I missed ever seeing Rush but I was able to see VanHalen. Thank God.

I saw VH original line up in Austin at the drum around 1982. I have had better nights.... I remember being on the floor standing the whole time not being able to see anything.
those were the days before the rows of seats simply disappeared as soon as the lights went down on the headliner.

which reminds me I can not even guess who opened up for them....
:dunno:

I'm surprised the VH catalog has not been remastered and enhanced more than it has . It almost seems neglected .

I must give a "Fair Warning" (haha, get it?) about the Van Halen "remasters" floating around out there- the ones released in the 1990s and 2000s.

I recently was listening to "Dirty Movies" off of "Fair Warning"- and it just did NOT sound ANYWHERE nearly as good as I remembered. Where were the drum dynamics? Those opening tom hits should hit almost like RIFLE SHOTS- and they just went "thud". Where was the sense of space? It's supposed to have lots of very good reverb and echo...

I found out, after doing some research, that the remastered versions, to quote someone on another board, are "compressed to ****". And that exactly describes what I heard.

I just went and ordered an near-mint ORIGINAL 1987 CD copy of Fair Warning- which I am going to rip, to play instead of the crappy sounding one I had been listening to, off of Tidal...

Now- apparently- the 24/192 version of the Van Halen remasters, is NOT compressed in the same way, as the Redbook (16/44, CD) or the 24/96 version has been. So, either try to find the original Redbook CD (original CD from the 1980s), or if your equipment can play it- the 24/192 reissue.

Regards,
Gordon.
