ya know it's the Sansui forum - right? Cool lab but the guy makes me snoozy. 8 minutes into the vid he's still yaking and hadn't even taken the darn lid off...
I posted it on the McIntosh forum first.
Everything this guy says applies to Sansui from the same era. The valuable information Mr. Carlson teaches works for Sansui too.

In 23 minutes of total fatigue, this guy tells me how important it is to clean pots and recap, while not showing a single example of neither. All of this under the wrong assumption that he manages to keep me awake. If he'd talk any slower, time would flow backwards for crying out loud. All he's doing is yaking and admiring McIntosh and a little bit of him self. Geez! what a redundant video, might as well be done by McIntosh marketing. If you had a clue about repairs - this would not be here. In fact, it would not even be on the tosh forum either. It has little value for anyone doing repairs, it's a complete waste of time.

Disagree? Point me to a single time frame in this entire video where there's a demo of repairs in action then...
It's not much of a *repair* vid when your subject is "one of the cleanest examples out there" and doesn't need repair.
All he's sayin' is "deoxit the controls, recap and don't spread cracked grommet salad inside when you swap to LED's" - tada!
Nothing new there, except it takes him 23 minutes without showing none of it done even once. It's ridiculous!
Any of you even watched this?

All I got to say is that I learned a bit from this vid, and others might as well.

I found the look at the inside construction of a McIntosh quite interesting, I've never even seen one close up. I can see that the method of dealing with, and checking dirty controls might be of interest. I think I would have tested the pre-amp to see if it meets spec', (especially If I had as much test gear as this guy!), rather than checking all the capacitors in it.

I have noticed with Carlson's lab recently, his public videos have become a bit basic and don't show the details of what he is working on, its almost like a teaser video to get more Patreon Members. If you look back through his catalogue of videos there's some really good stuff in there showing everything.I found the look at the inside construction of a McIntosh quite interesting, I've never even seen one close up. I've seen in quite a few McIntosh and they are so nicely engineered and built, but the thing that's slightly annoying about them is you have to have the correct board layouts showing the component identification etc, its almost like they made them so only people with the service manual can repair them.
There was some interesting information like about having the chassis as a faraday cage, and the reason they run the cables like they do, and the fact that after about 38 years the caps were all in spec.
I would imagine he ran it over the FFT analyser for frequency response and distortion, he's done that on other videos before, but I think all that now is for his paying Patreon members...
