EPI 601's

I have all the drivers out now....the wiring is a mess on the inside. Jumpers all over the place. I guess you will have that with 6 drivers in a speaker. I really need to get some pics to you guys...I do need help. I also have a multimeter I can use to test the drivers.

I think it really is the crossover. Certian woofers work...you have to crank the volume up to hear any of the tweeters (after disco'ing the woofers so i didnt go deaf).

Trying to figure out the crossover looks lie it will take a bit.

I'm going to go and try to take some pics for you guys becasue I am lost now.

Congratulations on the Epi 601 pair, Meat! I recently got a pair of A120 Epis up and running. The Epi fan base is pretty big here at AK, and if you follow all of the way through and get yours fully working again, you'll never lack for support and help. Pictures are very helpful, if you get the chance. Plus, we want to see a pair of the 601's!

X1000, let me see, let me see!!:music:

Thanks...I was looking at that earlier...my pics are being mailed from my phone to omy gmail account...I'll post them in a few minutes.

I'll go check the resistance of the speakers really quick witht the DMM, I dont think its the speakers but you never know.

OK....the drivers are good. the 6 inch woofer is 3 ohms, 8 inch woofer is 4 to 5 ohms, and the tweets are 3 ohms.

If your speakers measure good (roughly between 3 and 8 ohms) and you have already cleaned the contact points with deoxit, I would start out by replacing that 10uf capacitor in the crossover. It acts as a high pass filter for all three of the tweeters. Since you say you are getting very little output from the tweeters, that indicates that the capacitor has drifted considerably from original specifications and is blocking the high frequency energy as well as the low frequency. This is a very common problem with vintage speaker systems - crossover capacitor failure.

Mr. Burhoe's loudpeaker formula is well loved and documented here, even though I think you may well be the first 601 owner among us.

Not even close to the first- there was a pair that circulated around for a while, (I think Fotno has them currently) of course that was many years ago. But congrats anyway. They are truly cool and unusual speakers, enjoy.

Since you have the drivers out, you can also check the function of the treble adjustment. Do you know how to measure that potentiometer?

Would that cap also make the front woofer not work? The back to 8 inch woofers work great, the back two tweeters work but only at loud volumes, the front tweeter and the front woofer no sound at all.

No, how to I measure the pot? do I put the DMM on the leads of it and adjust it...making the resistance change?

The capacitor should have no effect on the front woofer. You could swap out the questionable woofer with the known good woofer to verify function. In fact, you could do that with all of the questionable drivers to help narrow down the problem.

Basically, yes. There are three leads on the pot. The one that is variable is called the wiper. If you happen to place the leads across two of the terminals and read a constant resistance while turning the knob, you are probably across the two terminals, not the wiper. According to the schematic at Human Speakers, the pot will have a range from 25 ohms to 10 ohms. If you read infinite resistance or the resistance won't settle down or track in a linear fashion, the pot is suspect. Clean and repeat. If it doesn't respond, replace.

This is Mike's wife...He is jumping up and down running around acting like a little kid beccause he's so happy that the putty knife worked. He says He loves you!

:worthless

There is also a 5 ohm resistor in series with the front woofer. Check that to see if it is open with your DMM.

Dont ever buy a 10 buck DMM on Ebay....

When I check the resistance across cap it was infinite....wish I could double check but I got a 10 buck DMM on ebay.

I have more pics that i will post tomorrow....I need to get to bed, by daughter is part rooster witht eh time she gets up. I can't wait till she knows what a weekend is.

I agree that a good meter is indispensable. However, a capacitor will measure open when checking for continuity. It is not a resistive element - it is capacitive. Don't throw away that cheap meter just yet. Oh, and replacing aged capacitors is common practice. Purchasing a meter to measure capacitance is nice, but much more expensive that swapping out the capacitors.

Those speakers look really nice! They even came with the pedestals. Judging from your pictures and considering the age of your speakers, I would go ahead and replace the caps and resistors, at least. That will eliminate that variable from the equation and will assure proper performance, once you get the Epis sorted.

Yeah the cap also does have an ever so slight bulge. Also I really think the switch that turns off the front speakers is in play here as well since there is a switch for them and they are not working at all....even the tweeter.

The DMM turns off and on...I think it has a loose wire.

These should sound better than 901's.

That switch on top of panel may be 4-16 OHM switch like on my 202's.

The tweeter attenuator only limits one tweeter on my 202'2.

Before I took apart the 601 speaker I had them hooked up and I have to say their low's were amazing yet the high's were not drowned out at all. When I closed my eyes i can swear it felt just like CSNY were right in front me....some of the best imaging i have ever heard. After i get these babies running I want to stack them with my DQ-10's... Only thing is both of these speakers are hungry. I hope my NAD 7600PE can handle it. It is pretty strong though.
