Favorite 70's equalizer and why/pics

Unknown.jpeg DSN_9939.jpg DSN_9942.jpg When I attended my first Sys-aud-com session with Don and Caolyn Davis of Altec fame in 76 on the design and implementation of sound systems for large spaces we had a class about room equalizers. At the time everyone preferred White passive and active room equalizers and Urei 1/3 octave , equalizers. The white passive units wouldn't work in the home and two Urei 539's were very expensive. Part of our class was about Warenbacks PZM mics that were bought from him by Crown. And at the time Crown was making the best Commercial amps. Mcintosh amps were considered high quality consumer amps with handles. They cost too much and were too heavy. Anyway back to EQ's. Don made an off handed remark about home EQ's being toy's accept for one. The Crown EQ 2. . It had fantastic signal to noise very low distortion and the filters added, Which is important other wise the EQ and speakers could cause of timing errors between the two create some very sever comb filter irregularities. In addition to the variable frequencies of the filters, the unit had tunable tone controls. This allowed you to get the general shape of the response correct and then use the parametric tunable filters to take care of the smaller irregularities. But as always it was recommended you never use boost with the parametric or others 1/3 octave filters. It adds noise and distortion when you use any filter in the boost side of the equation. I got my first EQ-2 in 76 new and its only been in the shop once in 43 years. Its very quiet and sounds, well it doesn't sound. You really don't know its there . It does its job. I bought a second one for use with the center channel when I upgraded to a 6.0 system at first in 2008. When I went 7.0 I added Audio control eq's for the rear and side. I prefer Urei 539's and some of the mini DSP's. They are much more accurate, but there is something about the sound of the DSP's I haven't liked. and the Crowns do their Job so well I don't see the need to change. I pull out the spectrum analyzer every 6 months or so just to confirm everything is A OK. But other wise the Crowns are never touched. I use a Graphic SAE 11 band EQ for detailed analog source adjust ments, and sometimes I turn off the CROWNS and use Room Perfect in my MX 151 HT processor. I have a pair of UREI 527A's that I'll eventually put to use, they are very well built

Don't use the boost function filters much more than 4 db as it will add noise and distortion. Why I preferred the 539 was it had high and low pass filter to protect woofers and to help control HF oscillations above the power limits of the speakers. In addition the filters of a 539 make it a true room EQ, where the 527 is a very detailed graphic EQ.

I was going to mention Soundcraftsmen,but to be perfectly honest they're not necessarily one of my favorites. o_O
That's depite currently owning two of their 20-12a EQ's (one is a parts unit mostly,no wood case,missing a slider knob or two,yadda yadda yadda).
I mean dont get me wrong,they're fine EQ's functionally speaking,it's just that there's not much to rave about them in terms of their aesthetics.

Anyhow I was thinking if I came across a nice old wood case low wpc reciever that 20-12a EQ would be a decent match for that sorta receiver.
The thing I also have a pair of Kenwood KL-555a that I was going to use with my Kenwood KA-7300/KT-7300 rig.
But then I found some suhweet LS-408b for the KA/KT rig and now those KL-555a are languishing unused.
So I was thinking a wood case Kenwood receiver & the 20-12a would be a natural choice for those KL-555a w/their lattice grills and what-not.
That would be a serious "blast from the past" sorta pure nostalgia system.

And I also want their (Soundcraftsmen's) Pro 22 and/or Pro 44 EQ's,though IIRC those were later items (from the 80's I dunno really).
So I DO like their gear as SOP. Just not enough to rave about it in threads like this one,LOL.

Anyhow,I'm :blah::blah::blah: here and I dont want to put everyone here to :boring::boring::boring: so I'll just digress for now.

The ADC equalizer that came with an spl meter and a 20-20 spectrum tone record. I wish I still had it but sold it with a pair of Bose 901 Speakers.
It was awesome, I had a lamp that I would unscrew the shade and the meter screwed right in there and I'd place the lamp in my sweet spot, put the record on and when each tone played I would adjust toggle switch til the spl meter was on zero. My system would then be flat 20-20 across the tonal spectrum.

Hi Everyone, I have a question about the Urie 539s. I have one from 1979 and one from the late 80's. One has 2200 mfd. filter caps and the other has 1000 mfd filter caps. I have recently had an issue with very low frequency oscillation at high volumes. Being that there are only 5 electrolytics in each unit, I was planning on replacing them all. Can anyone give me some insight into why the to different value caps and which I should go with?

Also, if anyone has any suggestions about the low freq oscillations, I would appreciate it.
