The largest problem with most (perhaps all) DCT's is that they don't have the right gear ratios for spirited driving because manufacturers have to keep emissions in check to stay within regulation.
Then again, the (most aggressive) auto shifting mode in my car is pretty good for spirited driving, I never even touch the steering wheel padels. And a ZF8 ain't even a DCT!
Another (sad) thought: Lightweight cars that really make driving fun, like a Lotus or a 'real' (read manual + ICE) Porsche, really do seem to be going the way of the Dodo.
Then again, the (most aggressive) auto shifting mode in my car is pretty good for spirited driving, I never even touch the steering wheel padels. And a ZF8 ain't even a DCT!

Entirely possible this was done as both an ego shield for the people who can't drive a manual nearly as well as they'd like to pretend they can, and a warranty shield. Its real easy to blow up a manual box by doing stupid things to it, but if the computer is really in control it likely won't allow itself to be shredded quite so easily.

Driving a 2014 Jetta automatic, I too have the option of changing gears manually, mind you only having 1/8 the power of the "Fer", but, at a much lower cost factor. Only used the "Triptonic" just the once, when... out on a test drive to buy.
Mind you, it is comparing "apples to oranges", eh?

What I find the most amazing is the sub 9-second 1/4 mile.
My dad and I drag raced a 71 454 Vette that was a tunnel-rammed, roller cammed, wheelie-pulling, fire breathing monster that "only" ran 10.30's. Narrowed rear with a spool, a full cage, stripped interior... The notion of a 9-second refined street car defies conventional logic!
But styling is subjective and I think the ZR1X is butt-ugly and looks like it was a prop in a Transformers movie.

But "track days" are far more available than ever before, too. For both bikes and cars.
I had several sport bikes over the years but there was essentially only one or two ways to get your streetbike on the track when I started riding in the late 80's. The two I remember specifically are the California Superbike School which toured with the AMA and the Penguin Roadracing school which operated out of Loudon NH.
Now there are literally dozens of opportunities all over the country.
And pretty much every drag strip has a test-n-tune or time trials available for street cars.

Actually in the faster classes of drag racing that require parachutes and especially in classes like Top Fuel, it is the deceleration from pulling the 'chutes that causes the most stress. There have been a few drivers over the years like Big Daddy Don Garlits and Joe Amato who had to retire from racing due to eye problems. The sudden deceleration from the 'chutes was causing detached retinas.
Since the ZRX1 is a car available to the public from a dealership, I think the real question is if there is an EV that you can buy from a dealership that is just as fast rather than a purpose-built car.
