Genesis speakers

Just picked up a pair of very vintage looking speakers from a GW with the brand Genesis. Haven't hooked them up yet, and no model number. Serial numbers are consecutive. Anybody have any input on these?

Excellent speakers. Before firing them up, check the foam surrounds. It could be that they've been done, but if not, they will need to be done.

Here are a couple of pics. Also they are sounding somewhat muddy. I did a resistance check on the tweeters and found them to be open. Is this correct for this type of tweeter?

Put your ear to the tweeter to check whether or not any sound is being emitted. If not, you may have a problem. Remove the tweeters and measure the resistance. I'm not sure if your model has a tweeter switch on the rear. If it does, that may be another thing to check.

the last thing these speakers sound like is.... mudd .. sounds like blown tweeters

I have a pair of Genesis 110s that I got last year (I bought so many speakers in a 2 month period I still can't remember where I got these)

Anyway, the sound from these is nothing short of incredible. I am sure that if your Genesis are not sounding GREAT, then something is indeed wrong. I can't recall reading anything BAD about EPI/Genesis speakers.

I was going to sell my 110s because I've grown tired of gear everywhere. I am having second thoughts, because these are my best sounding speakers next to my Polk Monitor 10s...and they would give the Polk a run for the money.

I hope that you solve the "muddy sound problem" Some other EPI/Genesis experts will be here shortly to help you out. The drivers are apparently still available at Human Speakers.

Good Luck

They do come up for sale on that auction site fairly frequently. Or become an AK subscriber and post an ad in the Barter Town forum....

i don't have a scematic of those in front of me but check the resistance of the resistor and make sure it is in tolerance. I have an issue with my EPI 601's and I am over hauling the crossovers soon. I just got the parts in. Those are the correct tweeters. They are air spring tweeters...same as mine.

dbsupercrew,
I believe that your speaker is the Genesis Model 1:

http://www.humanspeakers.com/genesis/gen1.htm

Your crossover is a simple high pass filter capacitor in series with the tweeter. If you are measuring across both the tweeter and the capacitor, that will throw off your measurements. The capacitor is old and is usually the culprit for lack of high frequencies in an older speaker system like yours. Double check the tweeter alone before you assume it has failed.

Your speaker could be the Genesis 110:

http://www.humanspeakers.com/genesis/gen110.htm

Studying this wiring diagram, you will notice that there is a coil in this crossover design. Same rules for measuring the tweeter - make sure you aren't measuring across the coil and capacitor, only the tweeter.

If the tweeter is still good, replace the capacitor in either speaker. If you have the 110, the coil will most likely still be good - they rarely fail and don't age. After all, it is just a coil of wire.

Here is a picture of the Genesis lineup that look the most like what you have:

If your tweeters are toast, you are in luck! Long time AK member in good standing, dnewma04 has a pair listed in Barter Town, a forum open only to subscribers. You can shoot him a pm for more information.

I had a pair of the Genesis 2 speakers, first "real" speaker I ever bought.
Looks like those have been refoamed usinf non original type surrounds, which Genesis usually used lime green. they didnt last very long either! ( the surrounds) Human spreakers is the place for all things to do with these.
Rebuild the crossover with better cap(s)....mine only had a switch, a resistor, and a cap for the crossover. I think, IIRC the woofer ran wide open. Passive made great bass.

It is hard to tell from the pics but those are either refoamed 1's (the original foam would be green) 10's or if the woofer is 10" instead of 8" then they are 110's.

Muddy is not a term used to describe fully working Genesis speakers. The tweeters can fry easily (still crying about blowing mine in my 1's and 10's) and it sounds like that is the problem you have. You could take them out and carefully and at low volume hook them up to a reciever to see if you get clear sound, if not then you know they are gone.

I did a resistance test on the tweeters.............both open...........looks like I will considering replacements. The woofers are 8".Thanks for all the info!

The tweeters are easy to find, and alternatives aren't likely to sound as good. Though I have to say those woofers don't look right to me. Can you post a picture of the back of a woofer?

There are tweeters for your speaker available in Barter Town right now. Dnewma04 is offering them, a long term, standup AK member.

I don't believe this is correct. The Model I's utilized green surrounds; the Model 1's were charcoal colored.

I have 10's and 210's and they both had the charcoal surrounds . If you nose around Humanspeaker you should be able to identify your speaker by its dimensions .

Not quite. EPI preceded Genesis. The Genesis tweeters are doped to better control tweeter resonance, whereas the EPI tweeters, to my knowledge, are not. I have a pair of each and can see a difference.

Well for what it is worth ...my Genesis 110s have an unusual 4'' square magnet on the woofers. They are 250Bs IIRC. They measure 10'' from outer edge to edge.
