Grado Hum Database

Pro-ject Xpression I with Grado Gold

with Phono Stage

1. Parasound zPhono Hum
2. Pro-ject Tube Box SE Hum
3. Bottlehead Seduction NO Hum!

I had being using an Ortofon Super OM2 with the first 2 stages b/c of the hum but when i got the BH Seduction and heard how quiet it was i decided to swap the Grado back in. I was blown away so now i alomst got the perfect sound :)

Pioneer PL-12D with Grado F1+ (equivalent to current SILVER model) exhibits no hum. I was shocked as this table has a good sized AC-synchronous motor.

Rega P2 with Incognito wiring (w/ground)
Grado Gold

Starts to hum about 1/2 way through side, then gets louder toward the spindle. Doesn't distract for music, but can be heard when arm is lifted at end of record.

It ocurred to me that folks should understand that cartridge hum can be identified by placement of the catridge with respect to the motor. You will have cartridge hum Only if the hum increases as you position the cartidge closer to the spindle.
If the hum is present regardless of where the cartridge is, then the hum is due to some other factor, like open connections and not the cartridge.
I'm just wondering if there have been some mis-identified hum reports.

Grado Gold / Technics SL-1500 & SL-1600; No hum with the SL-1500 & very, very slight hum with the SL-1600.
All that and a bag o`chips!

Grado Red in a Thorens TD-125MKII - not only hummed but started an oscillation when the arm was moved halfway to the end of the table (I think it was reacting to the speed control circuit board). Also Grado Black in a Dual 1235, hummed when the arm was about 3/4 of the way through the table. Got rid of them both and I'll NEVER even consider buying another one...fool me twice, shame on me. I went back to Shures in both of those tables and no hum whatsoever.

Rega P2 with Grado Gold:

Zero-Hum and excellent tracking

Cartridge was installed by dealer, not me. Probably the reason why it sounds so good...:music:

Yamaha YP-D6 and New Grado Prestige Green

0.000000 Hum at any volume.

Nice Cartridge BTW. Burning it in now.

I have a sony ps-x7 from the 70's with a tan grado cartridge . I just bought a thorens td-160 turntable and thinking about taking the old grado cartride off the sony and putting it on the thorens with a new grado gold stylus . Does this sound like a good combo ? Any advice would be appreciated .
