I just inherited my step father stereo equipment. I know this worked but I can’t figure out how to turn it on. I plugged it in, press play but nothing happens.

You might be missing a belt or it has fallen off. You can lift the platter off and see if it's there. The platter is practically flush with the surrounding plinth so it can be hard to get a grip on it. Sticking something like a toothpick in the gap can help lift it without danger of scratching as a screwdriver might.

Try rotating the platter manually. Press the start button while doing so and see what happens. Probably wise to remove the precious (no longer obtainable except used or from Soundsmith, and both options are eyepoppingly expensive) stylus assembly first.

What happens if you press the 'Cue' button instead? In this case,, the turntable should start, the arm should cue over the record but remain raised above it until you press the Cue button again.

If this works, then your Play button is dodgy. If it doesn't, then you may have some kind of power supply issue or a bad mains connection.
