I suppose this could become a niche format. Currently there is a high end reel-to-reel format. The tapes are crazy expensive and you must play them on a proprietary reel to reel player which is uber-crazy-expensive. Yet, it exists and it persists.

I've read the problem with the laser turntable was that you heard every single pop and crack. Unlike a stylus, which to some extent will push dust out of the way, the laser reads all of it. So your records aren't worn, but they sound terrible unless they're spotless. They'd have to encase the vinyl in some kind of a permanent yet retractable cover to keep the dust out...think the old 3.5" floppy disks for computers.

Pono wasn't a new media format. It was just a high-end version of a digital media player, created by Neil Young, someone who cares about audio quality.

Yeah, on reflection, I shouldn't have included Pono. It did fail, but I'm not sure why. High quality music players are successful (sort of) as are high quality streaming services. Maybe it was the combination of the two?

What or rather who, is “T-Bone”? In cajun lingo, preceding a name with “T” distinguishes that person as junior or like Big Johnny is the daddy and Little Johnny is the son. T -Johnny means the same thing, but isn’t as weird once the son is bigger than the dad. i have a nephew who is almost 40 and is still known to the family ( except his wife and children) as Little Johnny. Maybe the worst was he had called me and said “ hey, this is Johnny….Little Johnny…” If he woulda been called T-John, no issues. Getting back to T-Bone, Little Bone? I’m not going there.

I get what you are saying. I grew up in a mixed English/French area. Half of my friends spoke broken English. I always thought it came from Petit Jean > 'tit Jean > T Jean? However I think in context, the artist considered a T Bone Steak to be excellence therefore his name?

My opinion is that this will be as successful as Elcaset, SACD, DBX disc, or Pono. Formats that target the high-end audio market are destined for failure.

I agree. The first thing I thought of was Pono. I think Neil Young's intensions were good, but too little too late. This pseudo analog laser disk ain't gonna happen in any meaningful way. That said, I also never thought anyone would pay over $1 million for an NFT digital image, so I could be wrong .

That's the giant leap forward, you see. Prior to T Bone's new method, the spiral was etched into the disc by a steel needle. T Bone's gone and found a way to have the spiral etched into the disc by music! Nice of him to give us this detailed explanation.

I sprayed a generous amount of Rust-Oleum acrylic lacquer into an aluminum pie pan. I then played my trumpet loudly into the pan. Amazingly the next day the lacquer was dry to the touch! I'm running with the theory that the loud music directly altered the lacquer molecules, so um, the lacquer dried. It's the T Bone acousto-lacquer effect. Promising technology. Hoping to raise $10 million in venture capital so I can buy a fast car and nice boat.

Well, he did produce the "Raising Sand" album with Robert Plant and Allison Krauss. Even if you don't like roots music, that's a pretty amazing album.

I agree and I think that he may have produced the new one by that duo as well. I know that he's done some other great production work as well and the bit of his own music that I've heard was good too...

Boutique releases like you are talking about are 2 track 15IPS; it's not a proprietary format, any 2 track machine from days gone by will play them, you don't need to buy new equipment. I could play them on my 50 year old Revox machine, but I'm far too cheap to shell out the bucks for them.
