I think the either/or you note in your OP seems to describe 2 kinds of AK members - the "it's all about the music crowd" and the "it's all about the gear crowd". My personal profile on this puts me at about 40% / 60% in favour of the gear. But obviously (? :D) with a ceiling, I won't allow my hobby to impact on our household finances in pursuit of that 'ultimate', at least not without the support and agreement of SWMBO. :music:

It's not quite chicken and the egg, as music existed before gear.
I think of you are a musician, it would be more about the music and less about the gear.
As I am not a musician, it's about 50:50 right now, but I keep reminding myself, the gear only exists to play music, not the other way around.

It's both, but I've always loved music since I was a small child. I've been mostly lucky of late, finally able to purchase my version of the dream, and enjoying a lot of music. I would still listen and enjoy just as much if my system were a Yamaha RS-300 receiver and used Performance Series Paradigms instead. I'm lucky in that way, too. Well, I guess I enjoy it a little more as is. :D
 
With recorded music electrical gear is necessary. Why not make it the best gear affordable? But I am a musician and, unfortunately (or maybe fortunately), I just want to hear good music. I have an amazing tolerance for variance of sound quality because, in the music world, there is an amazing variance in sound quality. My gear is what I call "good enough for who it's for". My music collection, on the other hand, is regularly increased and improved.
 
I like the whole hobby of Hi-Fi. I like trying to get my system to sound like live unamplified music. I like collecting music in many different formats, trying to put together collections from my favorite artists. I like chasing down good deals on gear upgrades. I like learning about and repairing gear from replacing the tweeter diaphragms on my B&Ws to rebuilding a blown up amp that I got a good deal on just to see if I could do it.
I like to go to many shows, both amplified and unamplified to keep the ears tuned. I also play guitar though that is usually amplified so I am all about finding the 'tone'.

Basically, I am pretty much in up to my ears in music and the gear that makes it and reproduces it.
 
No goals or expectations, come what may.
If I find something that sounds really good, gear or music, I'm pretty stoked and don't mind if it sounds like a stereo system.
 
I'm 90/10 on this, I'm not too much into the gear as long as it looks good, not into the black boxes with 250 buttons, and it has some reviews on here I can read about before purchasing.
Maybe I a have long time to think about the gear, just not yet.
 
To enjoy the music, better quality gear enhances the experience, but probably some gearoholic in there too say 80 vs 20 :)
