How to wind tape even?

Wilhem is quite correct on metal reels not helping winds..... and this is coming from someone (me) who has dumped a pancake or two accidently....not much fun.. especially if they were 14 inch pancakes.....

if a tape is stored heads out, I usually have a second deck standing by where I can play wind the played tape back onto the reel. If you have a studio deck, it makes it really handy to play wind at 30 ips, if not, 15 or 7.5 will still do the job, just takes longer.

most decks have a much lower take up reel tension in play mode than they do in fast wind mode, which improves the tape uniformity and promotes even tape tension in the tape pack.

I'm lucky that I have a deck at home (X2000) and some at work (Studer A807's) that each have a 'library' wind function; tho I don't like using the X2000 with its sluggish T/U motor that has been rehabbed already (so I use RW instead).

With two track and full track tapes you store the tape tales out. Then you rewind the tape before playing . I had one machine that played at 30 ips and used it to wind 1/4 trk tapes after only playing one direction. 3 and 3/4 ips tape goes by pretty fast. Reduces winding time by a factor of 4 for 7 1/2 ips tapes. If you have the variable speed control for a Revox you can reduce the play time for storage, too. Professional Ampexs had a variable speed edit function for searching tape and could be used for speeding up the process.

I have a STUDER A-810, 4-speed model.
So if I need to store some tapes in played-mode I use the 30ips speed.

I must be missing something or my decks dont damage my tapes. Have 4 Akai's and a Sanui. Ive never had any tapes damaged by any of these machines. Be it normal play speed or ff or rewind.
