Have you tried a different set of cables?

Use the equalizer in the tape loop not in between the pre and main.
If used between pre and main the noise floor will be increased.
I second the ground loop.
Try these things one at a time.
Try different interconnects.
Try reversing the ac plug on eq and receiver.
Try a ground between the receiver and the eq.
Ground loops are a PITA to correct.

Maybe it likes the music you're playing so it's humming along?

Also, when you crank up the volume, there are no danger to overload the EQ, also no need to adjust EQ I/P level as you change the O/P of your pre amp...
Should have knowned that last night when I had a pretty big party, playing MP3's from IPOD ( where levels goes all over... ) having to play all night with pre amp volume, EQ I/P and amp I/P... If I would have use the tape loop, the only button I would have had to use would have been the pre O/P.

Oh yes! I've got this old Nikko Amp and PreAMP that as in the great line out of Spinal Tap, goes to, well, way up, but by the time I add the EQ, 1 click is enough in my basement apartment.
And it hummed! I finally switched the cables and presto! Fixed.
What is bad grounding? I see a ground connection of the equipment, but what do I do with it?

If you swapped out the bad cables & the hum is gone, you don't need to do anything with the grounds on the equipment itself since they are grounded properly with the new cables.
