I Rebuild Marantz website

Tom doesn't use NTE devices, or cheap capacitors. Nor would he ever use Ratshack tuner cleaner in a potentiometer. He also would never have transistor leads crossed over the top of each other like irebuildmarantz shows in one of the pics. Tom would find the correct device.
Also, I never see Mr. irebuildmarant on here giving advice and helping folks out.

Not to mention, Tom actually answers the phone when you call.

Good to know. What is an NTE device?

I've gone through that site and read everything. IMHO it's a scam. My personal rule of thumb: If they aren't here on AK with cred and proof as all the pros here are, then don't use them unless they can prove what they say and are professional. Personally, there are some great folks here ready and willing to help and they know what they are talking about and have a lot of hash marks on their belt, I'd stick with that.

NTE is a brand of replacement electronic parts. Their semiconductors are suspect in that no one knows who actually made them, therefore the datasheets are only close but not exact. The recommended NTE parts might be a good match, but then again maybe not. It's too hard to actually know. And considerably more expensive than other higher quality parts like Fairchild, ON, Toshiba, etc. NTE parts are for last resort only.

Got my reply from Robert after sending a second email today:

Hi Keith,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I’m still catching up from a crazy holiday season…

Actually, my deposits have not been refundable since 4/09: http://www.irebuildmarantz.com/policy.html I’ll happily hold on to your restoration slot for one year past when the slot comes up, but that’s the best I can do.

Cheers!

Robert D. Bowdish MCP

SO I GUESS HIS PERSONAL PROBLEMS BECOME HIS CUSTOMERS PERSONAL PROBLEMS.

I'm done with this.
So let this be a warning to anyone who is foolish enough to send money to this guy. Be prepared wait as long as he deems necessary... :nono:

I am not here to bash anyone I am just saying if someone told me I was fifty third in line I would move on else where.

If I was 53rd in the queue, that means there must be 70 folks in line. 70 units x $100 deposit = $7,000 in hand, and in the hands of someone who does not refund money, or respond to e-mails, or seem to be too worried.

There is a big flag on him over on the Klipsch forum, where he lost a forum member's receiver and did not refund the deposit. :tears:

Catrafter does superior Marantz tech work, also.

There are 178 (well actually 177, since i give up) in his queue as of 12/31/10. That's a lot of deposits.

I understand he has had a very rough time as of late and probably needs every cent of the money...but business is business.

So if you are feeling love in your heart and want to help Robert out, by all means send in your money. I hope my $100.00 helped him out.

If you want get your stereo repaired before the Mayan Calendar runs out,
I'd look somewhere else.

Well this is rather depressing. I'm one of those guys that donated $100. I have watched his excuses grow as the queue gets longer and longer. I now learn about his deposit non-refundable policy. Shame on me for not reading the fine print. Lesson learned.

A non-refundable deposit in this situation likely means the money was spent.

Update.

As promised I received my item from Robert today! Did the heat from applied internet pressure do the trick? Probably. Mike.

I will vouch for Catrafter- he's a class act.

Probably so. But talk about a long queue...

"I work on a first come, first served basis, wait time may be approaching 3 years. I don't charge anyone a fee for place in the queue, I know I have some clients in it that are not going to avail themselves of my services when their 'turn' comes up. This probably makes the waiting time appear longer than it is."

.

any suggestions on HOW we get any money back...or.....if we're all just cutting our loses...How do we see to it that peeps here are well informed of what history has taught us?

Edit...: I will go through paypal to investigate my options for possibly getting my monies back somehow. Credit cards have safeguards/insurance for good faith cases.

Well, given the feedback I have received here, I have elected to bypass
the 'itakenonrefundabledepositsonMarantz.com' vendor in favor of repair
services offered by a vendor with more positive feedback.

A relevant question came up with this vendor as to the length of the wait.
I asked him if he could determine the mortality rate of some of the customers
in the queue based on past statistics, assuming the average age of the customers
in line was slightly higher than the number of 'youknows' heard in the
typical interview of an NFL lineman. This could do nothing but
shorten the wait.

Do you guys have a support group for guys waiting for gear service?

And thanks for your feedback, all. Very helpful.

Taking a non - refundable deposit on a unit you don't even have in your shop is in-excuseable, if that's what he's doing. If it's on repair kits he is selling, and there is a waiting list, there is no reason he should be taking deposits until he is ready to order parts. I don't take deposits, even on work that is on the bench, unless the parts are expensive.

[Rant begin]

I'm posting in response to the low cost of caps ($20 -$30) per unit vs. the final cost. It will take 10-20 hours to PROPERLY clean, recap, re-relay, re-lampo, re-vellum adjust and align a receiver. At minimum wage of about $7.50 (from memory) that's $75 to $150 more. Who out there in the real world does a skilled function for that? Auto repair labor rates per hour is more in line with $60/hour. At that rate I could ask $600 per unit and eat the parts cost and labor over 10 hours! I'm just saying have some compassion on us who do techie work even on the side as I do.

[Rant end]

Thanks for letting me vent.

P.S. I never ask for any money until all work is completed, I don't think that is fair!
