Infinity RSb reincarnated

As for a vintage speaker or amp rebuild, that is all driven by what I can find. Right now folks want crazy $$$ for anything desirable even in trash condition. Doing research on amp building from all new parts and maybe dual monos? I would like to feed them digitally from Tidal or Qobuz masters. Just starting to learn more about MQA. Tidal has a 4 month trial for $1.00 per month. I am looking at amp boards based on theTPA3255EVM Ultra Low 0.006% THD+N at 1 W into 4 Ω 315-W Stereo/600-W mono PurePath™ Ultra-HD

0131211235.jpg I'm refoaming a set of RSb's and just want to recap the crossovers while I have the woofers out. They look original, but are not the values on the schematic from the .de site.

Any recommendations on replacement values? I will eventually be powering these with a Marantz 250.

Thanks

Not unusual for vintage Infinity. You'll find many references in other threads regarding this issue. There is also ongoing debate as to whether the the Technical Sheets reflect the latest revision. So, the question is, re-cap like for like as built or follow the Tech Sheet. Personally, I've re-capped several vintage Infinity and I've just done like for like and have been pretty pleased with the results.

Replace the silver electrolytics but leave the yellow film caps, they last and are part of the Infinity Sound...

Don’t agree on keeping the yellow caps....better is better...if you replace those they won’t sound like some other manufacturer...

Thanks for your input, all. I will look for the threads specific to this issue as well.

Apologies to the OP. I didn't mean to interrupt your thread. That's some amazing looking modification work you've done.

I replaced the front tweeter caps with jantzen and bypassed with the Russian oil. The high value bass were an electrolytic and poly in parallel to meet the value and bypassed with the Russian oil. The mids I believe were polys with Russian oil bypass. I will post the parts list. In signal should be poly or film and the shunt to grounds can be electrolytic. You have to consider the difference in resistances between the original electrolytics and the new film or polys. You probably don’t need to replace the original caps on the tweeters - mine were a perfect matched pair and tested perfect for esr and uf. I salvaged those and used for the rear firing tweeters I added. If you go back in this thread, I posted the schematic.

You combine in parallel which add up to your values. Combining the polys with the electrolytics kind of split the difference between the original design for the mids and bass which were all electrolytic. The jantzen and Dayton 2.0uf totals the 3.5 for the tweeters. The Russian oils -

You also want to completely disassemble the pots to thoroughly clean and lube. Mine were all bunked up. They weren’t corroded or pitted just nasty. Just pop the clips and pay attention to how they go back together. When you have the variable resistors out, put your meter on them and mark the ohms as mine weren’t exactly linear from min to max.

I am just starting to restore a mint Luxman R-3055 vintage 1979. Over 100 caps and a mix of polar and bipolar. Going with mundorf for the polars and jantzen on the key signal paths. So will see how that goes. The power supply filter caps total 15,000uf. Sourcing transistors and op amps. The better quality parts add up quickly...

Mine are obviously one of a kind and highly modified while staying within the infinity design theme. I highly recommend using the best parts you can find or afford when restoring as these drivers in the proper form sound incredible. Way beyond speakers with far more ritzy pedigrees. Building cabinets are a huge level of effort and quite a bit more than I anticipated.

What are you looking to get into? Another set of speakers? Build or restore/upgrade an amp? I like buying and restoring speakers that might otherwise get parted out. What are YOU thinking about doing?

Found a Luxman 3055 from 1977 that’s been in the original box for over 10 years. Cutting my teeth on solid state vintage amps. So many parts it will make your head spin. As for speakers the Rs II

Larry, right now I am end to end rebuilding a vintage ~1978 Luxman r3500 receiver to learn more about classic solid state amps - so many parts it makes your head spin. I messed around with a set of dynaco monoblock tube amps in my youth. Otherwise I have only plugged in and listened to amps. As for speakers, the infinity RS II would be my next choice for a project. The blend between a box speaker and a panel. Finding or building a set of tri amps optimized for the bass, mids and emits. You are not that far away from central Oregon. As long as the cabinets and drivers are intact, I would love to find a set for the next speaker walkabout.

I had two pairs of RS2's, but sold one pair about a year ago for $500. I have about $350 worth of new caps I took out of the pair I sold (the crossovers were returned to stock) and they will go into the remaining RS 2's that I picked up in Moscow Idaho last year. The RS 2's are a very nice speaker. I may sell a pair of Quantum 2's a little later this spring. I have too many speakers (12 or 13 pairs). Too many projects and not enough time to get to them.
