Well, we don't usually discuss deep topics here. But because you asked. Yup, we are doomed. Science tells us that many different animals have shared this planet, some have their day and then disappear. New research on the dinosaurs disappearance concluded that it was a cascading event that started with active volcanos, followed by high CO2 content in the atmosphere followed by high acidity in the ocean. It wasn't their fault, they didn't contribute to their demise. Now, back to us. We seem to be contributing to our own demise (resource depletion, climate change, and so on). So, our disappearance will come earlier than it otherwise would (on a geologic scale, that is). Now lets talk about viruses. They seem to follow us through time. The black death (of the 1400's) first appeared several hundred years before (called the Plague of Justinian). And the black death reoccurred several time again (between 1500 and 1750). There are a number of deaths each year from the black death in the US each year. As a species we survived, although at times and in particular places the Black Death cut the population in half. We have a pretty good chance of managing and mitigating the impact of the current virus. But in the long run, well ...
