I`m an ex-NewYawka, (Hell`s Kitchen) so for me, it was always "SODA" (or, if you happened to be on Staten Island, "SODER")....only farmers and hillbillies called it "POP"....
In Berkeley they call it the latest thing to slap a tax on to protect people from themselves. In 2014, voters in the city approved a 1-cent-per-ounce tax on soda/pop and energy drinks. The city council is spending the money on health and anti-obesity programs with guidance from the “Sugar Sweetened Beverage Products Panel of Experts.”
In the same way as we should not let the term "3D" pervert the correct and proper use of "stereoscopic", so too we should use "fusiform" and not "submarine" to describe the morphology of said sandwhich!
(On my 6th one today already. Don't even need to eat... just drink Diet Pepsi. Always get your 32 packs from Walmart. Pick up 6 at a time!! That will hold you down for a couple weeks. lol.)
HA! Funny thread - In my travels I find mostly "pop" up north, "soda pop" midwest and "soda" down south... Although the way folks travel, I hear all permutations no matter where I am...
Down here in Florida, I am probably the only one who refers to a cold soft drink correctly: Pop. As in pop machine. Soda is flavorless carbonated water you mix with scotch.

.....I don't drink "diet" cokes/pops/sodas on a regular basis and never have....but of the few I've had, "by far", the best tasting one was a diet Dr. Pepper....didn't taste like a diet drink at all....
I always thought it was soda in the USA and pop in Canada.
Now I know it's more complicated then I thought.
Calling everything coke is just not right, I was going to say it was lazy, but then you have to ask everybody what kind of coke they want. So that would be too many words or vernacular verbose.
Just looked it up. Tonic is apparently a Boston term, and not a New England thing. My apologies to the folks in the adjacent states North, and South of Mass.
