JBL L100 Status

Looks great!

What did you use for the faom ring on the tweeter? I've been looking around for some foam to replace my decomposed ones for a while. How did you cut them? I've been thinking of doing something with a hot wire and an old turntable to get them nice and round.

Lookin' good!

Yes, I'd like to know too please. The foam rings on my 4311wx are still fairly intact, but if you touch them they fall apart.

Very cool speaks BTW. Good job :thmbsp:

I had a small left over piece of the waffle foam speaker grill that Radio Shack carried about 10 year ago. I cut it down to about 1/4 inch thick, cut it in a circle, and then glued it to the front of the tweeter. I have tried to find the waffle foam grill at Radio Shack to replace the L100 grills but it is no longer available.

Same problem with my foam grills , the JBL web site wants $80 for the replacement frame. anybody have a source for just the foam?or any other replacement idea's

Not sure but that foam looks a whole lot like the stuff used to make the 'element' in the humidifying part of a central heating/air cond. system. You might want to check out your local hardware store or HVAC supplier.

I think that the foam used on grilles is supposed to be acousticly transparent, sound passes through. But the foam on a baffle should do the opposite job, there you want to absorb sound. But hey, it looks nice just the way it is, and the effect of the baffle foam is pretty subtle anyway.

That foam around the tweeter was shot on my 4311's as well. I was able to order a pair from the service section at the JBLPRO.COM website.

Cost was minimal--maybe 75 cents each.

I just checked out that site. The foams for the LE25-2 are part # 53363 and go for $1.60 each. There's another PN for the LE25-4, but they are also $1.60 each.

Scarcely worth messing around with?

Maybe after the holidays I'll order up a bunch to save on shipping; I'll bet it JBL charges more to ship a couple than the $3.20 to buy them!

The LE25-4 foam rings are probably slightly smaller outside diameter than the LE25 and LE25-2. THe LE25-4 has a raised aluminum "beauty ring" around the foam, that probably infringes on the space that the foam ring would occupy had it been a standard LE25.

BTW: Must be L100 week. Also found a pair, this weekend! All work, except one midrange (which I managed to disassemble, I'll be able to reuse the cone and dustcap, all I'll need is a new voice coil and spider!). I've been soaking them in lemon oil and oil-buffing them with a fine Brillo pad all afternoon...

Gordon.

I may have a working LE5-2 sitting around, I'll have to look for it. Are you interested?

Don... possibly. Does it have a red fabric surround, or a black one (around the edge of the cone, just inside the foam ring)?

Heck, if it's cheap, I'd probably buy it regardless, just to have a spare...

Thanks!

Gordon.
