I'm working on restoring a pair of JBL L100. I'm wondering what you guys prefer as far as grills go...

A lot depends on the room decor. I got new covers for these L100's because the orange that was on them when I bought them just looked terrible in the room. I changed them to black because the Klipsch Forte's were black. Much better look in the room, I think.

When I did mine I was torn between orange and blue. I went with blue because I knew I was probably not going to keep them forever and figured blue would be more appealing to more people. They looked great.
If I had kept them I would have preferred orange. Our house is done up MCM and the orange would have looked really cool IMHO.

I did mine in bright blue, but that is just me. Black was just "boring" and the burnt orange and brown just looked "dull" (to me) YMMV.

I did mine in a natural grey foam (unpainted) since I knew I would be selling them
and that looked better better in my room next to the black leather POANG chairs.
The L200s underneath I first tried in grey, but it was too much grey,
so I had a pair done in Brown that looked great against all that Walnut veneer.

I could not vote as my choice was not there. That choice is none. I found with my L100s that the grill interfered with the both on and off axis mid and HF response and clarity.

As far as looks, I like hjames's color which I think is brown. I had the blue color and it was a bad choice for the WAF.

Blue. Blueblueblue. Blue.

Did I mention blue? ;)

Redid my L50's. From brown to blue. Fortunately, in my case, wife loved the color.

My original grilles were Chocolate Brown, and the box says BR so I was tempted to stay original. I also like the brown with the walnut cabinet. it is the most subtle and conservative looking IMO.

However, brown matches none of my other speakers. Beside that, the market (and therefore value) in good condition L100s has gone from audiophile / listener to collector, and collectors want them for the "pop" they have with bright quadrex foam grilles.

Talking to Scott about what colors he sells most, he told me that orange is the top seller, closely followed by blue. Both have that pop.

I chose blue. My L65As are blue so they match something in the room, JBL used a lot of blue on monitor baffles, and blue just feels right to me. I like looking at the blue in the room, and my wife voted blue so that she could paint the back wall a dark blue and buy paintings of boats with blue in them. Done. She did not like the orange at all, nor brown, would have chosen black as her second choice.

I picked bright blue foam, just classic L100 all the way! Unless I had me some of that burnt orange deep shag straight from the 70's, then I would go with orange foam.. Maybe get several colors from Son of a gun.. One for every mood!

Of course, it depends upon the room. Orange is really cool in a Mid Century Modern room, but Blue is safer for more rooms.. One can always spray paint, them as desired.

I have two pair that I would like to get the square cut foam for.. Who sells the best foam inserts?

This guy makes the inserts... https://www.huntleyaudio.com/

I believe that Huntley only makes the fabric inserts.

After a fair amount of research I decided on Scott (no affiliation) at Sculptured Foam Innovations (ebay seller, also supplies his foam to Kenrick in Japan as well as others. He does a great job IMO and offers the standard colors with a reasonable price and lead-time. Scott also will walk you through how to install them if you need to, and offers with or without new frames.

I believe his direct email is available on the Lansing forums.

No matter what colour you choose for yourself, in 5+ years the colours will fade some.

True, so will the wood, which is why my speakers all wear custom covers when they're not in use. It extends the life of everything including surrounds.

I got called away before finishing what I wanted to say.

If anyone finds the colours too bright when new then they need to consider that in the future fading will occur (covering speakers up is a personal choice and a smart move to protect your investment, but not everybody does it).

My point was (but not well expressed) that people may not like the new colour as it’s too bright, but they may like a faded version of it to take the edge off the brightness.

I have a pretty nice pair with no foam inserts.I just can"t bring myself to spend that much on foams. If I did I would go with the brown.Just a more neutral and safe color.Definately would not do the blue.
