Hello friends at AK! I am asking for help here. What is the best Johnny Winter album? Preferably live, something that would have a lot of extended bluesy guitar solos.

Thanks
Richard

John Dawson Winter III is my favorite. Couple of songs on there have some cool solos.

Saints and Sinners is OK. There's a live album with Good Morning Little Schoolgirl, but cant think of the name of it, probably just Johnny Winter Live.

For me, the only trouble with Johnny is his voice. I'll take his guitar playing over that anyday.

I purchased this "Remastered" legacy edition of 1969's
"Second Winter" when it was released in 2004.
Great recording. Its actually a two disc set as they
added a copy of a 1970 live show at the Royal albert hall with brother Edgar,Tommy shannon & Uncle John turner.
It also includes a small book with write ups and photos.

One of the best, if not THE best, live Johnny Winter albums is entitled "Live...Johnny Winter And...". I believe I've also seen it entitled as "Johnny Winter And Live..." Either way it's a great album despite the awkward title.

Incidentally, this album contains the song "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" that jfine referred to above.

This is definitely an album you should check out.

I second the Johnny Winter And-Live also, as far as live albums. For a good cross section of Johnny Winter's Works try to find Anthology

Johnny Winder And Live...I have to third that one...excellent, Johnny and Rick Derringer in their prime. I just picked up a CD of this, replacing a cassette and it just rocks.

Yep, as Johnny & blues recordings go, Progressive Blues Experiment (1969) and Nothin' But the Blues (1977) are about as good as JDW gets.

Both good choices, but I'd vote for "Progessive Blues Experiment". On most of his albums his vocals do tend to grate on me after awhile, but on this album he seems to hold back a bit. Easy on the vocals, but screaming on the guitar - that's how I like my Johnny Winter.

I was a Johnny Winter fan from when I was about 15. Lived in a quiet older neighborhood in the suburbs and all the kids on the street were into Texas chainsaw blues, mostly played on my parents GE console stereo. Gotta love it.

The previous posters have it right. Johnny Winter And Live is one of the most high energy albums of all time. His versions of Johnny Be Good and Jumpin Jack Flash kick ultimate ass. John Dawson Winter III is probably his most comercial album, but it's worth it for one song, Stranger. Still Alive and Well is great, and he has made some stellar appearances on other peoples' records as well. Try Roadwork, by Edgar Winter (great version of Still Alive and Well) and Hard Again, by Muddy Waters, which Johnny produced.

MMMMMMmmmROCK N' ROLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's "Uncle" John Turner. I know cause I met him one time at my apartment when I lived in Plano, Texas, and didn't believe who he was 'til he got into my album collection and showed me his picture... :smoke: He recently passed away.

John Dawson Winter III is a good album that is not out on c.d.
I have this on vinyl, sounds pretty good but a remaster would be
nice. Johnny Winter is awesome.

I have a recording called Johnny Winter "Captured Live" that is great. That is more or less a given for Johnny.

I recently saw him live and even older and sitting in a chair the man can push the Blues to the limit. That is all in another thread.

Johnny Winter And Live kicks seriously...his covers of Jumping Jack Flash and Johnny B. Goode destroy the originals. I saw Johnny live a year ago, wondered if he was going to live through the show, he looked so old and feeble...but he started playing and the magic was still there.
