Keith Richards doesn't own an iPod

Wow, what a bunch of old farts. Even the 32 year old. ;)

There is nothing cool about getting too old to embrace new technologies. And the ipod is one of the defining technologies in audio history.

The Technics 1200 is considered a defining technology in audio history but many people don't own them. As was the hand crank phonograph but I don't see that being a must own for people of any age. I don't understand your point?

When the 1200 was out I bet a lot of people had a TT of some kind. As for the Victrola, I imagine the cost kept a lot of people from owning one.

I think the point was that there are a bunch of cranky old men in this thread doing the 'you kids get off my lawn' dance. That's really something to be proud of, IMHO. I am a grumpy old man myself, hoping to become a certified Old Coot (tm) in time, but some of you guys seem to have a head start on me. My hat's off to you cranks.

53 year old who built his own fancy schmancy pc running sophisticated software here...for me its just about being an iSnob. ;)(me being the snob)

No cell phone either. :smoke:

A smart phone someday would be cool if I can squeeze open my wallet. :)

Yeah my wife will not have a cell phone. She has nothing against technology. She does not want people texting or emailing every inane thought that pops into their head concerning work. She only has a simple phone, with texting disabled. If they really have something to say, they can call her, at normal business hours.

I dont have one either. If I want to bring music with me I use my portable Mini Disc player. Never have owned an mp3 player, can't see a reason I ever would. Oh yea, don't have a cell phone either.

I only listen to music that is played on hollowed-out logs, in-person, and use a tin can and string when I want to talk to someone. I don't even own a computer and have never heard of the Interwebs or discussion forums. Because technology is bad.

Who cares? Charlie is the barometer of hip, not Keith.:D

I can see why somebody wouldn't a cellphone, or a "smart" one, or an ipod, or whatever. I don't understand being proud of it, though.
Things like smart phones have a ton of cool technology. I was talking to an actor I now recently, and it was mentioned that their latest short film was on itunes. $1.99 and a few minutes later it was on my phone. I played the heck out of my walkman, discman, and portable mini disc player over the years, but I don't recall any of them offering that kind of capability.

You topped the post I was going to make. It was loosely based around this:

As a tube and vinyl loving guy this thread is a reminder to step up my efforts efforts to correct folks who call me an audiophile. Liking old stuff doesn't make me a Luddite but sometimes people think it does.

I love tech but everybody obviously dosnt need every litle gadget that gets pushed on us.
I have two friends with smart phones...they love them and I think they are pretty cool.

BUT,they are constantly whipping them out while you are trying to talk to them.During a movie, football game etc...

Its a simultaneous connect and disconnect from the world.

Heck, I often wont even answer the phone at all if it rings while I am with somebody.I think it surprises them a little. :)

This thread had me laughing the whole way through. I did have an iPod, a gift from my wife several years ago. I think I used it 3 times at the gym and it stopped working. I wonder if there is a correlation between my not going to the gym and the broken iPod. I do have a sort-of-smart phone (iPhone), but do not use it for music. It is a convenient bad camera however.
At home I have systems about and in the car I just got a cd player with either usb or audio input. So I may use my phone to hook into the car system.
I just don't have the need or desire to block out the world at other times. At least to me, that is how it seems and recognize others may view this differently. Although. if I remember correctly, it did make the cardio stuff at the gym tolerable.
So hats off to Keith!

I think it's all good; whatever people want to do in the way of using or ignoring technology is cool. There aren't any rules that say people have to like this or use that; or refuse to use it either.

What makes me laugh is the 'I do not like it, therefore it sucks for all people' attitude. People often confuse subjective reality with objective reality.

Sadly it has become socially acceptable to diddle your phone instead of paying attention to the person/people in front of you. If you were constantly raising a newspaper in front of your face while somebody was talking to you people would think you are rude. Do it with a phone, and it's OK.
I was at a playground with my kid a couple of years ago when I saw a guy lose track of his two year old(?) because he was glued to his phone. The kid was 500 metres across a field, and I had to tell him.
I see this as an attention span problem, not a tech problem. You can have the technology and not be ruled by it. Some people are ruled by it, I guess.

No iPod or iPhone.

(I do have a WP8 device and a ZuneHD, though, but the ZuneHD is used for my workbench system)

I am 52, I was around well before the Sony Walkman, had one, and no, I do not think it sounds anywhere near as good as any portable MP3 player I've ever heard. That's just silly.

I don't think anyone said anything about cassettes sounding better than mp3 players (but on the right cassette deck, it's an entirely different story, although in recent years I've decided to let go of the medium entirely).

I know you're half-joking in the quote above Erik, but you guys are overreacting and reaching with this insinuation that people who eschew iPods generally don't embrace new technologies. As has already been said in this thread, we don't need to embrace all the new technology that's constantly being pushed on us, just because convenience has led most people to do so - and that's fine for them, I have no issue with their personal choice.

I see we both responded to the same post, but I read it differently than you did. I guess that just goes to show how difficult it can be to communicate effectively by writing rather than in person. I read "I used to own a Nano" to mean "I don't care for the Nano/MP3" and "now I listen to a Walkman" to mean "because I think it is better." If you didn't read it that way, I accept that.
