Wow, what a bunch of old farts. Even the 32 year old.
There is nothing cool about getting too old to embrace new technologies. And the ipod is one of the defining technologies in audio history.
This is pretty funny Erik. I don't own an ipod or want one which = uncool old fart who is too old to embrace new technologies.

There's a difference between "I don't own an ipod" and "I don't own an ipod and anybody who does is an idiot", which is the general tone of every one of these threads.
I have 3 ipods, and rarely use them because I stopped updating iTunes and switched to flac, which it doesn't support. But I loved them and have about 8000 mp3s of every imaginable genre that I can take with me anywhere I go so that I can have music if I want. OH NO!!! THAT'S SUCH A TERRIBLE THING!!!!!

I own an iPod classic for 2 reasons. 1) When traveling as a passenger, I can listen to tunes for a long time sans charging the battery. 2) When at home, if I am actually listening to music, I listen to cds. When in need of background music, I can set a playlist in motion and it'll play for hours never repeating a song. I also have a smart a** phone. I don't care who else has or doesn't have these items famous or not, why/why not, etc. Quite frankly, I find this to be a rather silly topic. No offense.

I love my iPod. It's a 160GB Classic that holds my entire music library ripped at 320 kbps (vbr). I use it when I'm forced to work from the main office (instead of my home office) and during my off road, four wheeling trips in my Jeep. With my entire music collection accessible with the press of a button there is no mood that can't be accentuated with the right song. Even my wife and son can find something on my iPod that fits their mood at any given moment.
I believe that the iPod, or generally speaking, the MP3 player has revolutionized how people access their music. When I was in college (way back in the early 90s) I would carry a wallet that held 40 CDs just so I could have a wide selection of music to choose from while I was at school 14 hours a day. Today, that big, bulky wallet is a dinosaur from the past and utterly inefficient compared to modern standards.

But they're MP3s. They sound horrible, have no audio in them whatsoever, they ruin every analog recording within 10 feet of them, cause global warming, and are made with baby seals. Why John, why?

****. I'm not totally anti-them either. iPods and MP3s work great at the gym, in the car, mowing the lawn, etc.
And while some of us bitch about their sound, Apple keeps making them sound better and better. The new earbuds are better than the old, rounder ones, and the latest Nanos and iPhones have noticeably more dynamic range than the older kit.
As for cassettes, note that the intro to "Street Fighting Man" was Keith's acoustic guitar recorded into a crappy portable cassette recorder and then dubbed over itself in the studio. I'd cling to cassettes too if I made that sort of groovy sound.

Agreed! Any over-generalization tends to lead to ugly places. Except for people who don't like vinyl. We know there is something wrong with them, but that's ok too.
