Keith Richards doesn't own an iPod

Still, the point remains. Whether or not a given band or individual musician has an iPod has no bearing on whether I like them or not and I highly doubt anyone will become a stones fan or any stones fans will shun them because KR ain't got no iPod! So, who really gives a dirty dead rat's hind quarters which celebs have iPods and which ones don't?

Somebody please tell me, as a music fan, how having the ability to carry around several thousand songs in reasonable quality with you in a small enough device that it can just sit around until you want to use it, is a bad thing. Another fun iPod storie. My ounger son had the little square iPod when they first came out. No screen etc. It was in his jeans pocket and went through entire washer and dryer cycles and came out and worked just fine!

I am finding it very difficult to not mention the cleaner bass and brighter highs... Sorry LOL

First, I'm no format (or gear) elitist. I myself cannot listen to anything less than lossless (FLAC), but I'm happy when people enjoy whatever quality of format...for the simple fact that they are enjoying it!

But, but, when compressed formats reign because they are most conducive to portable DAP's, then more and more music is produced to sound "good" on those compressed formats and thus all music fans suffer. We now have, on top of the loudness wars, the compression wars. A double threat to quality music production across all genres. Hopefully as player memory keeps getting cheaper more people will switch to the larger lossless formats as seems to be the case in recent years.

Myself I have only used Cowon DAP's (though my girlfriend prefers Sansa products) for I think they offer better quality all-round than comparable DAP's. But, again, I'm no gear elitist so if someone likes their iPod or any other of the many other DAP brands, or even prefers these devices over traditional home stereo setups, I hardly see any reason to get upset about it. :thmbsp:

I said it before, but if somebody came up to me in 80s and said, "Hey kid. Some day there will a music player the size of that Twisted Sister tape your holding, and it will hold thousands of songs" I would have laughed my face off.

Did you see Permanent's post above yours? Again, I'm not anti-iPod, but he makes a valid point, and among audiophiles I think that's probably where some of the animosity comes from (note I said "some").

Permanent Waves did a good job making the "compressed music threatens us all" argument, but his tone leads me to believe that even he'd recognize that argument as speculative.

I understand the argument, but am not buying it when evidence indicates that most every new band I want to purchase music from (immediately and on line!) makes their catalog available in FLAC form.

I did, and I'm not sure how to comment. Sure, some music is recorded with MP3s in mind, but it's not across all genres. This week alone I've listened to modern jazz, blues, classical, and rock cds, and none of them exhibited the dumbing down for the MP3 generation thing. They sounded really good. Better than many of Keith's recordings, to be honest.

I had a pocket sized transistor radio with a single ear plug. I would have easily swapped that for the sound quality of any iPod with even the included ear buds. We are getting by far better quality portable audio then ever before.

It is a valid point but largely limited to Top-40 music. And even then, the blame would be on the music industry, not the device. I've said it I don't know how many times here, the Loudness Wars are the most overblown thing in audio. I guess if your music is limited to Ke$ha or Metallica it impacts you but I can only think of a few albums that I've had that were so terribly compressed that they were unlistenable, and counter to that I've heard more excellent current recordings than ever before, as well as audiophile-targeted reissues by the dozens that are really well done.

I am getting old and I forget things, forget where they are, forget to recharge things and even forget that I own some of these things. I even forget when I get to work some days to open my diary, it's that busy. I am not a free spirit as my wife calls me, I just forget where I parked it. If I needed music 24/7 I would have been a musician. I look forward to quality audio time at home, not an endless library of music in my pocket all day.

This maybe heresy to say here, but some quiet time is great.
