Can you place the speakers so they are against the back wall? If the fireplace ledge interferes, you could try temporarily placing some wood boards under the speakers to lift them, raising the speakers enough so you can place them against the rear wall.

Since these speakers are pretty old and you aren't satisfied with the midrange and treble performance, you also may need to check the nominal impedance of the midrange (8Ω) and tweeter (4Ω) to ensure they are good.

OK if you google "klipschorn false corner plans" and click images there will be a ton of examples and links to plans. K-horn is not a K-horn if not in a solid corner. People will spend as much of your money as you let them so what ever you do, do it one thing at a time. If these were mine I would replace that dog barker K-77, make the false corners and recap the crossover and call it a day. Improvements after those three things will not get you much and can run the price tag up fast. And as mentioned check the mid and woofers to make sure they are working right.
 
Yeah, I found it kind of puzzling. They just sounded dull and lifeless and, to me at least, there was a marked loss of detail. Not what I was expecting, for sure. Without th braces I think they sound very dynamic.
2x4's chew up quite a bit of cabinet volume. Roy did a few additional things for the C IV, including adding and angled wood on top with more insulation. He also went to flared ports. Different is never the same.
 
In your case, I doubt reversing the woofer polarity will change much, but that's the fun of experimenting! Below are rough simulations of the squawker voltages. The Green is the stock E2. The Red is your modified one. Notice how the swamping resistor creates a first order high pass to the squawker vs the second order on a stock E2.

If you think the Heresy has a "barking midrange," try the HIP, which, except for the capacitor change from 13 to 8 uF on the mid, uses the same as a Khorn AA network, But boy, is it ever LOUD for PA work with a Subwoofer below 150 hz!!
 
Yep, and the LUMBER costs way more than the crossover. As long as it sounds good and it has pretty Veneer, people don't care about MDF. Except DaveTennessee, and a few other DYI freaks like me.
I’m feeling really good about my not-Scalas and am highly confident that they will perform markedly better than the $13,200 real thing for an investment that’s under a grand. Counting the time I’ve put into them, they’re under $3-4k, depending on how I charge for my labor and still a better deal than the vintage real thing for the same price. I’m not dissing what brand K sells, it’s a great product, but rather, I’m extolling the virtues of a studied and deliberate DIY effort and the value of the community that made it possible.
 
I'm storing/testing a pair of '78 La Scala's for a friend, and notice occasional bass booming. Would the addition of bass horn braces help? Greg Roberts sells them for $75 a pair plus shipping.

Every set of LS's I have had my hands on for years gets either 25mm Baltic Birch sides or at least a brace. Yes these mods will make a big difference especially if you play at higher volume.
 
Don't forget that $1 added to the BOM cost translates to $5-$10 increase in the MSRP. That works for decreases, too.
Not unless volume goes up. The bean counters prefer a better bottom line, and the engineers want to spend it on R&D. Guess who usually wins first and last.
