Klipsch Modifications

in fact, it took me a couple of hour's listening to realize that one of my Dayton Sub 1200's wasn't working. I replaced it with a smaller sub that I had laying around and it's barely on. Winni approves:

at this point, it's worth stating the obvious: these speakers are hideously ugly, but the sound is glorious. In due time, I'll put them back to Super Heresy mode and I've already begun planning the next project, which will involve these passives and bigger horns. @Deang I may be contacting you about that 15dB auto former you mentioned previously, so I can do away with the L-Pad on the mids.
 
Had visitors Saturday night so had to take the MEH out of the living room. So it's my modded KPT-305s (aka K402 based MEHs) vs K402 MEH vs Acarian Alon IV.jpg long time reference Acarian Alon IVs in lightly treated 7' ceiling concrete basement. Still dialing them in.
 
Quite a bit of measuring with REW - Umic 1 showed that the two MEHs are quite similar in response (good) and with very different timbre to the Alon's (no surprise) especially since they don't have the depth of bass of the Alon's. I will say there's something very special about all of the music coming out of one horn! The limitation in this room is the mostly untreated concrete and drywall surfaces and 7 foot ceiling.
 
This Pano picture makes the room look larger and especially the listening position further away but it's just 26' x 14' so, I listen about 9' from the center and 11' from the Jubes. Once again the Peavey FH1 on the left is just being used as a stand. Chris A has graciously agreed to help me dial these in.

You fixed a specific amplifier problem, not a speaker problem. Class D is load independent and makes this crossover change unnecessary.
 
I lusted after Forte's since I first experienced them as a young soldier in the early eighties but I just couldn't afford them. I finally acquired two sets of them a couple years ago in pristine original condition. They sound amazing but I'm curious about potential mods, updates, maintenance, and the like. I currently power them with a Yamaha C-4 and M-2 combination and play a lot of vinyl. Can these great speakers be made better? Thanks everyone.

Do you have Forte l or ll? There aren’t many mods that can make them better- @Daveintn ’s L-MAHL tweeter is one; you may or may not find improvements by changing the mid driver and if you have Forte ll, adding MUMPS to the mid horn will reduce the beaming effect and improve off-axis dispersion.

I remember a guy that had hardware to suck the thing in tight against his gasket, too--many variants exist. Several people sealed the top of the basshorn bit in the corner with small triangles or a whole top--depends what you're seeking, how bad you want it, how big the room is (to get the bass you want), what your walls are comprised-of, etc. For example, lowest bass can go right through walls and so on, so some people have tested reinforcing their own wall/corners ala this (another thing that's not mine):

Likely the best implementation of a Klipschhorn corner box I have seen here in this video

^^^^^All gear and no room treatment. I can almost hear the slap echo from here with all those hard surfaces. It's amazing how many people spend thousands of dollars on gear and totally ignore the room.
 
My 78' Cornwall I Project:

Tightened any loose connectors on crossover, sprayed/cleaned w/Deoxit , tightened mid horn magnet (and checked gasket condition, ok) √
Replaced previous owner white Sonicaps with Jem factory approved caps √
Replaced old crappy grill velcro with new heavy duty velcro √

Fill in rear panel holes with wood filler, drill new holes, add new screws, seal back panels with speaker gasket tape

But I prefer a live room myself, like a live venue, YMMV of course
 
A measurement of my Heresy 1.5's showed a suspicius dip between 700hz and 1400hz. It dawned on me that with the E2 the woofer to squawker circuits are in phase, even though they are both second order. I switched the polarity of the woofer, and the dip disappeared. This is an easy mod for those with E2's wired per the schematic.

Interesting :cool:... I never had the idea to experiment this tip ! :confused:

That said, my modified E-2 did not showed that issue... Maybe the mod cancelled it ?
