local weed growing discussions

Alobar, that particular plant I didn't really care for. I had a mishap early in the growing season that killed most of my seedlings. That plant is a clone I got from a guy I know and will probably be the last thing I smoke from last years crop. I'll probably end up giving it away because I doubt I'll go through all of last years crop before next years crop is ready. In total I got a pound last year.

P.S. I don't smoke daily, only 2 or 3 joints a couple days a week. Tomorrow will be one of those days spinning tunes in my music room with a few cold ones. :)

So from what I learned 35 years ago was that plants need a day/night cycled to produce bud. Is that still considered true? My home town (65th parallel) we never got dark out all summer so everyone grew under metal halide lights year round.. There was a time in the 90's where the authorities were trying to shut down commercial growers and were employing the power company for records of abnormal usage..

Many years ago when it wasn't legal I did some indoor crops and from what I recall early in the crop they went 18 hours of light and 6 off. Once they are getting closer to maturity they go to 12 on and 12 off. This may vary depending on the type of crop you're going for. Mine was small plants with quick turn over.

LED grow lights are a real game changer if you’re really experienced and know what you’re doing. One of my nephew’s F-I-L has done indoor grows as large as 6,000 sf so I have that resource if I ever need to grow my own. I got a female baby from a friend, bought a grow light and food and nurtured it for a couple months and bought soil amendments, transplanted it outback until it sprouted pollen sacks a week later. No green thumb here.

You may have turned it into a hermaphrodite via transplant shock? Maybe someone more experienced than I will chime in. Please do.

The feminized seeds I've bought have all been prim and proper ladies. (grin) I may be able to bring a plant or two your way this spring.

I feel your pain Elco. All my plants were grown in pots last year but I decided to start one seed directly in the ground. It was doing fantastic and suddenly when it was almost as tall as me it developed pollen sacks,,,shiiiiit!!! From what I know it should have developed the sacks much earlier in it's life, go figure? Last years was trial and error growing in a new space on the side of the house that gets the most direct sun light, so this year will go a lot smoother.

P.S. If I ever wanted to go back to indoor, I could because I still have one of my old 1000 watt lights, balast, and timer. I'd have enough space for it in my shop/music room if I got rid of my hoard of stereo gear that takes up a good quarter of my space.:dunno:o_O:confused:

No telling when a plant will show sex until it does. As others have mentioned, you can buy clones. Or instead of planting one seed you could have planted a couple of seeds and chopped off the males when they showed, or maybe leave a branch to make a few seeds. Those plain paper and clear cellophane CD envelopes work great for isolating/collecting pollen.
You do end up with 50/50 M/F usually, but I'd probably go 6 min to make sure because sometimes the odds run floopy. I like to start a min of 10, then clone the females and run them sometimes for years. Always come back to the beans though, they provide variety, and for free no less.

Is hash these days anything like it was in the 70's or has it been "genetically modified" like weed?
This brings up something that I didn't think about. Are the new strains of weed actually a GMO? Or has it been enhanced by selection process only? Keep in mind that GMO has had its DNA code altered, in a laboratory, either by adding or subtracting bits of DNA code. Natural "hybrid" created plants are not manipulated on the DNA level. Admittedly I don't have a great understanding of gmo but I do hope that these strains are not being cooked up in labs until the end product isn't actually cannabis technically anymore.

At this point, as far as I know, selective breeding only. You be surprised what you can get when you breed different gene pools.

Just gleaned some Jack Herer buds from my plants and they're turning purple.
Far effin' out, man! :beatnik:
I tend to name all my plants and keep them seperate after harvesting. One of my plants was starting to turn purple, so me being a car guy (not really a Mopar guy though) that plant was named Plum Crazy Purple. ;)

Light pollution sucks.
I-94 glows a sickly sodium orange out by our place. To the east, though, it's often pitch dark, due to the lake. Wish we had more of that here, but I doubt there are many (or any?) Dark Sky communities on this half of the country.
