MC275 - Fake?

Do you know the history of the Gold versions? Pretty sure the first was the MC275G which was limited to either 70 or 71 examples. This model proved to be so popular that the 50th in gold came out immediately after G production ended. Not sure what happened with the gold models, I read somewhere that this option was added to the line for the Asian market.

The first MC275 reissue was in 1995 which was the Gordon Gow Commemorative but that wouldn't coincide with the 40th anniversary of McIntosh's founding. According to the Kessler book, 100 GG were made (in response to demand from the Asian market) of which ~ 75 were directly exported to Japan. As far as I'm aware the only gold on the unit was on the RCA jacks, bezels around the XLR inputs and speaker terminal screws.

Yeah, the Willsenton R8 and R-800i have been the latest darlings in tube amps. While waiting for an MC275 until I can afford it, these might be what I'd get instead of the fakes.

Apple MacIntosh fakes are sometimes called "Hackintosh".

Hackintosh's are actually not fakes, per se. No one is selling them as the genuine article. They are computers that are built to run the Mac OS on non Mac hardware. They can work quite well, as I know a number of audio engineers who use them. The benefit is price and being able to use specific parts. The downside is that you often have to take on additional ongoing hobbies to get them to work.

Apparently, at least for audio work, Hackintosh's will likely become obsolete once all the audio software is ported over to M1 hardware, which is much cheaper than traditional Apple hardware and is much faster, better. Except for those who love doing that kind of thing.
